Conversations with Max Swart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Swart.

Hi Max, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
So around 4th grade, when my sister picked me up from school she played Skrillex in the car and I remember being completely blown away and from that day, I knew that music was my calling. I started to produce around 7th grade, releasing little demos and track under various names, and around freshman year of high school, I released music for the first time under the name Outerskies (My track ‘In The Moment’ now has 1.7 million streams on Spotify). The name Outerskies comes from the feeling I get when I listen to music.

Growing up, my parents got a divorce and I had trouble so I became reliant on music. Its unrequited love was the most consistent thing in my life as a child. Music took me to a place where I could see the good in any situation. So my mission is to give my listeners that same experience.

Right after high school in 2019, I got an internship at Hush Money Music, learning from some of the biggest names in the industry and I really mastered my craft. During my internship, I learned how to run a proper recording session and how to handle and deal with artists on a daily basis. I haven’t put out anything recently because I am a perfectionist as is every artist. Right now I do have an EP with Annabel that will be released hopefully this summer but the project is TBA. I recently started a production company called Out Of Orbit where we sell beats (via beatstars), offer in-person sessions as well as online virtual sessions (Via Soundbetter). I honestly am just a kid that is aggressively obsessed with sound and music. It’s literally all I do 24/7.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not been a smooth road nor will it be. Music is a really, really hard industry to make it in and the more I learn about it, the more complicated it gets. But at the end of the day, your art speaks louder than anything so that definitely helps me sleep at night. It was a really big adjustment when music, something I did for fun, turned into a job. But it’s all about how you look at things.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a 20-year-old music producer/songwriter/singer/engineer who has been hands-on in the industry since middle school. One of my biggest accomplishments is that a couple of people got freaking married to a song I made in high school with my buddy Gabriel James (‘In The Moment’ and ‘Possibilities’). What sets me apart from others is my music taste. You are a result of what you listen to. I grew up idolizing artists like Flume, Chet Faker, Skrillex and Daft Punk while also absolutely being obsessed with bands like The Killers so I’m pretty excited for the future !!!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Art is a form of unrequited love. We have lost so much this year but music and art have been the only thing keeping me sane.
