Conversations with Marlene Sharp

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlene Sharp.

Hi Marlene, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am proprietor and top dawg at Pink Poodle Productions, an entertainment consultancy, which is comprised of my canine colleague Blanche DuBois Sharp (yes, we are related) and me. Some of our clients include Rainshine Entertainment and its kid-friendly subsidiary Kinsane Entertainment, plus its grown-up animation division Raijin Studios; The Center for Learning Unlimited; and WeFixYourScript.com. A few of our past clients include Toonbo Entertainment; Spicerack Productions; Euramco Pictures; and Global One Media. Pre-Pink Poodle, I worked in nearly every aspect of show business. My specialty is supporting roles in the spotlight AND behind the scenes . . . but I always wanted to be a star . . . Nevertheless, here are some humble career highlights: I served as Director, Production at LEVEL-5 abby, home of YO-KAI WATCH and other hit Japanese video game-based franchises. Formerly, as Producer, TV Series at Sega of America, I worked on much more than the Teen Choice Award-nominated cartoon SONIC BOOM, although BOOM was my heaviest responsibility. Most notably, my Hedgehog duties took me to the heights of nerd-dom as an official San Diego Comic-Con 2017 panelist.

As a freelance journalist, I have written (and continue to write) about pop culture for online fan destinations, such as CultureSonar, DOGTV, ToonBarn and Geekified. As a short film auteur, I have modest bragging rights to prizes at the Canine Film Festival, the San Luis Obispo Film Festival, and others in various parts of the world. As a screenwriter, my professional stamp is embedded in lots of merchandise-driven cartoons – such as SNACK WORLD on Crunchyroll.com – and in my original stories. I am the proud winner of the 2019 LA Shorts International Film Fest Script Competition (an Oscar and BAFTA-qualifying fest!), at which my backdoor sitcom pilot received a staged reading by The Groundlings. As a garden variety human being, well, I am a dog-lover who embraced that affection rather late in life and extra enthusiastically! My life story could be divided into two eras: 1) BC – Before California, 2) ADD – After and During Domiciling (in California). I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to San Diego post-college at Loyola University for the MFA Musical Theatre (graduate) program at San Diego State University. Following graduation, I moved to Orange County, CA for a year; had an existential crisis and moved back to New Orleans for a year; had a second existential crisis, and landed in Los Angeles. One might observe that my personal and professional lives have been parked in LA for quite a while now.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. Name a roadblock, and I’ve probably crashed into it. My most recent hurdle was a mysterious, near-fatal blood clot in my leg during fall of 2020. Luckily, I appear to be on the mend.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What sets me apart from others is clean comedy. It is my management style, my writing style, and my dog parenting style. It’s also quite an effective coping mechanism.

What does success mean to you?
Success seems so subjective, methinks. I try not to define it. But if forced to do so, I’d say that success is survival.
