Today we’d like to introduce you to Keely King.
Hi Keely, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started creating from as early as I can remember. My mind feeds on visuals so I’m always forming stories and making connections with colors, shadows, shapes, expressions and gestures I see around me.
I have an intrinsic compulsion to make art including oil paintings, ink drawings, animations, etc. Though I don’t always know where the inspiration comes from, I’ve learned to trust my instincts and incorporate mistakes as they are often the result of my most significant creative breakthroughs.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My path as an artist has not been the smoothest, as I am my greatest critic. It took a very long time for my ideas to match my skill level. The inner battle of desperately needing to create but not yet having a connection to my inner “Artist” was hard to facilitate. It was also challenging to get to a point where I could work more from the peripheral and let my subconscious take the driver’s seat rather than siding with my idea of how I wanted something to turn out. This helped me understand that each art piece is a journey and only by traveling through it will I discover its fully-realized vision.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to think of myself as a mixed media artist. I don’t like being tied down to any one medium as it helps my brain to change things up and avoid burnout by keeping a fresh perspective. My main mediums are oil paintings, ink drawings, animation and design work.
A big obsessions I have are figures and faces. I often draw people in my life and situations I’m in as a way to understand them. Through my art, I’m aided with a point of view I would have otherwise never been attuned to.
My work is abstract and psychedelic. Flowing with a focus on translating feelings into visuals rather than how things appear to the naked eye.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
In my life, luck has given me the tool of art. Without it, I have no idea where I would be.
