Today we’d like to introduce you to Josh Darcy.
Hi Josh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always intrigued by music. My parents put me and my brother in the church choir when we were kids, and that was the first time I was exposed to performing any kind of music. At home, we were constantly listening to music. My mom played a lot of Gospel, R&B, and a little bit of Rap music that was on the radio. My dad played a lot of old school music (Al Green, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Gap Band, etc.) and Hip hop. All of these genres shaped my love for music. The first moment I thought about rapping was when I heard The Carter 3 album. It was during the summer of me going into 9th grade when that album came out. The way Wayne was rapping on there made me want to try rapping just for fun. I wasn’t serious at all about it at the time because my main focus was basketball. I started actually writing music/rapping during my Junior year of high school. During that time, my main focus was getting into college and playing Basketball, but once my senior year came around my love for basketball declined. Not so much the sport but the process of staying committed to it. I no longer loved the process.
After my senior season, a few of my friends and I started making music. It was all for fun at the time, but after a while I was serious about it. That Summer going into to my first year of college at CSULB, I bought a Pro Tools program from Best Buy. It was this student edition that I got. It came with a mic and all of that. Once I got that, I started recording my own songs from home. I had no idea how to use the program at all, so a lot of my early recordings were terrible. But I learned the language of that specific DAW, which benefited me down the line. After a while, I knew how to mix my voice for the most part, and I also got comfortable recording and understanding how to use my voice as an instrument. Every day during that summer, I was in my room writing and recording constantly, and I fell in love with the process. That’s when I decided in my mind I wanted to make music for a living. That’s where the journey started. Since then, I’ve done an internship with Concord Music Group. I’ve released a few songs throughout the last couple of years via Soundcloud. I released my first song on Apple, Spotify, Tidal, etc. in 2020 titled “Reflect”. I am a happily married, independent artist, working a corporate job trying to invest in my craft. At the end of the day, my goal is make a name for myself and share my story through music.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. I struggled with self-doubt early on with sharing music. I struggled with balancing college and creating music, maintaining friendships, family losses, comparing my progress to others, etc. There were a lot of different variables on this journey that made it challenging to continuously believe in myself. I got to a point in 2018 where I zoned in and made the decision to bet on myself regardless. Even if I’m going through the toughest time in life, I’m always going to have music to express those emotions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Music Artist/Rapper. I feel that I’m most known for my writing/rapping abilities. I am most proud of the state of mind I’m in right now. Reason I say that is because right now, I feel that I am the most confident I’ve ever been and it shows in the music that’ll soon be released. What sets me apart is one my writing ability and I have a desire to bring artists together. Meaning if I have the ability to help another artist get to where they want to go, I want to help. I’ve always been a selfless artist and I want to see others win. I want to help others tell their story.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think the trend in the next 5-10 years we’ll continue to be the growth of being an independent artist. I think that shift will continue to grow. We have access to release music on our own and we can create a genuine fanbase if we do it the right way. The future will continue to benefit and support the independent artist.
