Conversations with Jennifer Williams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Williams.

Hi Jennifer, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always hated my job. I would always switch from profession to profession thinking it was the job that was miserable but, in reality it was me! I hated the routine every morning, getting up at 5am, dressing myself and my daughter, taking her to a babysitter, sitting in traffic, etc. just to get to work and my boss isn’t having a good day or isn’t happy with my performance. Don’t even get me started with the co-workers who think they are the boss (sigh.) Just to sit in traffic to get home (we all know LA traffic) hurry figure out dinner, get my daughter to bed just to do it all over again! How draining!!!! I couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me, why every profession I was in I was miserable. I’ve had great jobs, at least that’s what I was told. “Girl, why would you leave that job? Thats a good job.” I worked a subway (first job) I’ve loaded and unloaded airplanes, delivered mail, was an after school teacher aide, I drove metro for five years, I even got into dentistry and became a registered dental assistant. Still wasn’t happy. I always had a problem at my job and the problem was me!

So once the pandemic hit, of course I got laid off (who would’ve thought the dentist would ever be closed?!) At first, I was scared; how was I going to support my child or myself? I found beauty in the midst of confusion. I started being grateful that I can just sit and think. I wasn’t moving around sitting in traffic, trying to please my boss or co-workers. I was at home with my daughter I was able to spend more time with her. So with so much time on my hands, I picked up a skill. I learned about how important credit was and started helping my friends and family understand the importance of it. I got so good at it my consulting business helped me open my second business, my clothing line. I feel free now. I can do whatever whenever I want without contacting a boss. I can live wherever I want. There is no cap on my pay. I’m not asking can I leave early or can I take a two weeks vacation. I can raise my own child and not the babysitter. Those 15 years of working job to job, I finally realized its not the money I desperately wanted; it was the freedom. I’m the most happiest and the most self-reliant since I’ve started my own business and I thank God for that every second.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Of course not but I’ve always loved a challenge. You can’t fail in business you just learn another lesson.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m known for teaching the importance of credit but my creative sides show in my clothing line Bodied Her. I love to create it brings me a lot of pressure. I once heard quote, “I don’t get mad, I create.” one of my favorite quotes. I’m proud of myself just actually doing it and believing in myself when everybody thought it was a joke. What sets me apart from others is I’m not doing this for clout, competition, or anything in that matter. I’m in it for the freedom, I’m in it because now I can pass a business to my daughter, I’m in it because now I’m in the position to create jobs for other people and help them possibly follow my lead.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Faith is a BIG. You must believe in yourself even when others don’t. You must believe in YOUR vision if you can imagine it, its possible. Other people may not see it like you and that’s ok just put your work out there, they always come back!
