Conversations with the Inspiring Rebecca Knox

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rebecca Knox.

So, before we jump into specific questions about your career, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I was born and raised in Long Island and NYC with parents from Colombia and Germany. I grew up in a vibrant household speaking German, Spanish, and English. At three years old, I began attending operas and theatre productions with my grandmother. Singing, dancing, and acting followed soon after—which is where I developed my love for the stage.

I’ve gotten to where I am today by working hard non-stop. Because I love what I do, I am not so worried about results, but rather the steady climb. I want to continue creating and writing my own material too!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been smooth overall for you?
Life is never a smooth road. I have been through endless rejection. I have screwed up auditions. I have cried. I have laughed. My advice to those who do what I do is to remember why you love the craft in the first place. It will always be hard. But that is part of it. Stay busy. Be curious. Go to plays. See movies. Take a class. And keep going.

Please tell us more about what you do, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I am an actor, writer, and producer. I most recently wrapped seasons 6 & 7 of Orange Is The New Black in a recurring guest star role and guest-starred on S1E08 of CBS’ Bull. I also acted in my first feature film alongside Stellan Skarsgård and Nina Hoss in Academy Award Winning Director Volker Schlöndorff’s latest film, ‘Return To Montauk’, released internationally in 2017. I also wrote, produced and acted in my first film, ‘Cavity’ which will be premiering at East Hampton Film Festival on July 22. I am writing two more screenplays.

I am proud of how far I’ve come and all of the projects I have been a part of. I don’t necessarily like the question “What sets you apart from others?” because everyone is on their own path. We are all so different, and that sets us all apart. All I can say is I love what I do, I have so much more to learn, and I admire so many of my talented friends beside me!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I think we are making progress. Most recently, I got an email from my agents about sexual harassment and how we should treat others/ be treated in the workplace. There is definitely a positive shift happening in the industry. I think steps like these, even with a simple email such as that, is raising awareness and breaking the barriers, especially being a woman. I am excited to see how many women are now directing, writing, and producing their own material. I am excited to be a part of that group of women. It is a collective force.
