Conversations with the Inspiring Mindy Weiss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mindy Weiss.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mindy. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a home where my mother gave the best parties. Her parties were always so creative, funny or over-the-top and always themed — the ultimate hostess. So I suppose it was in my blood from the start. But I didn’t plan on becoming a party planner.

I got into event planning when I was in the custom stationery business. One of my clients asked me if I would also plan their party. I originally said no. I didn’t think I wanted to be a party planner, but the client wouldn’t give up. So ultimately I planned their very large 75th birthday party. From that one party, I got my next ten events.

But I had to work it. I had to give a lot of discounts and even do things for free in the beginning. I figured if it was the right event, I’d have 200 guests in attendance to show off my work to and that marketing expense got my business going and growing right away.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Be patient. That’s my advice. You might have to do things for free in the beginning to get your name out there. You might have to start by planning kids birthday parties when you really want to be a wedding planner. However, you get there, hang in there. Patience pays off.

I’ve been fortunate that my road has been a growing road. Even today my business continues to grow beyond my own imagination sometimes. That doesn’t mean we haven’t had hard times. 2008 was the hardest year of my business. The economy was bad, I bought a local grocery store at the wrong time and looking back, there are things I would have done differently. But I’m lucky in that in the end, we survived and thrived.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Mindy Weiss Party Consultants story. Tell us more about the business.
I’m a party planner. I plan and produce weddings, social celebrations, mitzvahs, and corporate events. My company is based in Los Angeles, though we produce events all over the world. I’m also an author. I have several books (and products too) from my Baby Keepsake Book and Planner to The Wedding Book and one of my personal favorites, my Mindy Weiss Candle Collection.

I’m known for my creativity (I love a good theme), my work ethic, my amazing team around me and their creative talents and probably some of my celebrity events too. I think one of the things that set me apart is the decades of experience I have and how I’m still relevant after all this time. I’m proud of that. That alone is a hard job.

What also stands out to me are the incredible people that work for me and our drive never to quit until every tiny detail is as fabulous as it can be. I still feel that I have to give 100% all of the time and fortunately, that means something and translates into business. Keeping my feet on the ground has always been important to me, and I think it has served me in the end.

Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Absolutely! My parents influenced me in incredible ways and if it weren’t for my childhood, I don’t think I would be a party planner or an entrepreneur. My mother gave the most fantastic, creative and unusual parties when I was growing up. I got the party planner in me from watching her. And my father was an incredibly hard working man who put in twelve hours a day and taught me the worth of a strong work ethic. Both of them taught me so much that has helped shape me today and the success of my business.
