Today we’d like to introduce you to Kim Hau.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kim. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I always knew I wanted to do something creative but didn’t know exactly what it was until later in life. I tried out photography in college, then switched to graphic design. During the last year of my degree, I found clay but didn’t know it was something I could pursue to earn a living. I kept practicing after work here and there for years as a hobby. I worked as a graphic designer, taught English in Japan, and substituted for teachers. After living in Japan and working as an independent contractor, it made me realize that I didn’t want to work for anyone else when I got back to the U.S. in 2009. I wanted “the life of a potter.” In 2012, after I was financially ready, I made the leap to pursue pottery full time. My tiny studio got built on our property and I’ve been slowly making ever since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The challenges of working with clay and everything that goes into ceramics is what keeps me interested. It’s a never-ending learning process.
What should we know about kimhauceramics? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I love working with simple, useful, comfortable forms with surface qualities that look natural, especially surfaces of stones and rocks. Surfaces that look like they’ve lived through a life of their own. I love the beauty of quiet pots. Pots that don’t need attention. Pots that only need the attention from the user when they sit and enjoy a nice cup of coffee while thinking about their own life. I’m constantly trying to improve the craftsmanship in my work and learn from every last pot I have made. I hope to do this until my hands fall off.
It would be great to hear about any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve used and would recommend to others.
I listen to tons of podcasts but here are a few I love:
– Waking Up with Sam Harris
– Tangentially Speaking
– Tales of a Red Clay Rambler
– The Potters Cast
