Today we’d like to introduce you to Elisha Wilson-Beach.
Elisha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a birth mom of three, adoptive mom of one and a stepmom four-step -“adults.” Yes, you read that right… eight kids (and a dog)… a.k.a. a professional mom complete with a B.A. in Child Development. I have been married to the actor Michael Beach since 2007 who is a true partner in this chaotic life.
Prior to having kids, I have been a professional ballet dancer, arts educator, community organizer, grant writer, and strategic planner. Unknowingly, all of my prior positions gave me the skills I need today to create and run The Mom Forum.
I began blogging in 2015 after a photo of myself breastfeeding on a toilet went viral. I responded to the social media storm with a blog on Huffington Post that also went viral and launched me into blogging. The response piece was translated into several different languages and shared across the world and I heard from moms of all walks of life thanking me for sharing my truth in motherhood and helping them feel better about their own version of motherhood. Prior to this, I had also started The Mom Forum as a private Facebook group to provide a safe space and supportive environment for moms that I knew to honestly share about everything that comes along with motherhood… the good, the bad and the ugly, share advice and maybe just bitch a little.
After a few years of dabbling in blogging, I decided to launch The Mom Forum as a media and events company that supports and empowers women in their journey through motherhood.
I hope to continue to build community, host events and create content for all forms of media that supports and empowers women in their journey through motherhood.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Building a media and events company has definitely not been a smooth road. Things are changing so quickly in today’s technology that it is often hard to keep up ahead of the curve and stay educated on all that is happening. However, the most difficult part about running a business is that I am the primary caretaker of my family and it can be really difficult to balance it all. The best pieces of advice that I can give are:
1. Plan, plan, plan… but learn to be flexible in this fast-paced, ever-changing world.
2. No matter how crazy life gets, do something every day to move your business forward.
3. Be consistent because slow and steady almost always wins the race.
What should we know about The Mom Forum? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The Mom Forum is a media and events company that supports and empowers women in their journey through motherhood with community, events and media content.
Our current roster includes the video series Best Mom Friends and #MomLife, Facebook Live series Monday Mom Chat and What’s for Dinner Wednesdays, and in person events and workshops such as our Mom Selfcare Workshop & Retreat and Moms’ Night Out.
The Mom Forum Podcast launched In July 2018 and features intimate mom-to-mom conversations sharing the journey to and through motherhood. And Season 2 will premiere in July 2019 sharing the stories of moms such as YouTube personality Glozell Green, Grammy award-winning singer Melanie Fiona and so many more.
In 2018, we released The Mom Selfcare Planner, a workbook to help moms create personal self-care plans for their daily life.
Motherhood can be so isolating and life alternating and so many women lack the support and community that they need to find their way through it. I am so proud of the supportive community of moms I have built and am building and the fact that I can use my work to support something that I am so passionate about.
Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Be who you are because that is what makes you special and what will help your business thrive. Take those risks that make you nervous and uncomfortable and use your failures as lessons.
