Conversations with the Inspiring Blessing Ndon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blessing Ndon.

Blessing, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Makeup artistry has always been a passion of mine, I was that little girl who played with her mother’s lipstick, only for the evidence to end up all over my clothes and hair. I loved art. Unfortunately, I couldn’t really draw well on paper but the human face was my best canvas. I practiced day and night with friends and family until I got the courage to start my own business. In 2013, I started my business as a mobile makeup artist while attending the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. During that time, I perfected my skills in areas such as applying foundation according to the different skin tones and colors, face contouring, fixing of faux lashes and applying of airbrush makeup. My goal was to be as diverse and as well round as possible when it came to my craft. During those years, I worked on various local fashion shows, TV shows, magazine photo shoots, special effects projects, weddings and more. After graduating college, I took the bold step of relocating to California to pursue my dreams as a film makeup artist in Hollywood. Although it’s only been a year since I moved, I have been fortunate enough to work on 3 independent movies and a few reality shows. I am currently in the process of enrolling in special effects makeup school to polish my skills and taking my career to the next level.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Moving to California was a bit challenging for me only because I had no friends or family here. I was out of my comfort zone with only a dream and a plan to keep me going, The challenges I faced where to be expected. The accommodation was definitely one of them. I had to live in a hotel for a week until I was able to get a place. Luckily, I got a job immediately, but it was still a bit of a challenge because the commute to everywhere was so far away. Traffic quickly became my worst enemy. After 3 months of dealing with it, I was able to adjust and plan my commutes wisely.

My advice to anyone who is chasing a dream or in the process of taking the next step in their career is to always have a plan. I knew I was going to face challenges but I wasn’t afraid because I had made accommodation for any financial struggles. I made sure I had enough finances to last me at least 6 months in a new place, I had a plan on how I was going to balance chasing my dream and maintaining a job to pay the bills. It’s always important to stay focused on the goals you’ve set and taken the proper steps to achieve them.

what should we know about Pbeestyle Makeup Artistry? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a mobile professional makeup artist. I travel to clients all over the Los Angeles and neighboring cities. I am known for my creativity and diversity when it comes to makeup. I am proud of my ability to do all types of makeup, from natural looks to Avant-Garde and special effects. Although I one day hope to specialize in special effects makeup for film, I currently do makeup for all occasions. What sets me apart is my ability to work with all kinds of skin tones and all genres of makeup.

For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
I believe everyone has a unique skill in which they could use to profit themselves. When it comes to the opportunities, one may not always have many especially due to the competition, in relation to their field and their demographic. This is why it is very important for individuals to continue educating themselves. I believe that with the right tools of knowledge, you can create a path to success for yourself. As a business owner, I make it a point to speak to people daily about the services I offer. I don’t necessarily have to be working for the “MAC counter” to be a professional makeup artist. As a woman, I strongly believe in supporting my fellow women. I believe in networking with like-minded folks who are headed towards success. In my field, I find my self constantly recommending women for work. For example, hairstylists, models, and photographers are always needed for any kind of production, it’s up to us to lift each other especially when the opportunities arise.
