Conversations with the Inspiring Alycia Mondavi

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alycia Mondavi.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Alycia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My sisters and I started working in the vineyards as little girls; by age 12, we could train new employees in the lab and the vineyards, sharing our family’s passion for making great wine.

I went to college in San Diego, but moved home shortly after, then went to work in the wine business, primarily as a paralegal and working around my family’s winery until joining full time in 2012 – my family encourages each generation to get experience outside the family business before signing up.

Currently, I serve as the CEO of Aloft and Dark Matter wines. My sisters and I are involved in every aspect – from farming to winemaking, marketing and sales – we do our best to follow where each bottle goes.

Has it been a smooth road?
I love my job and the challenges we face. I think it’s a unique perspective to be a millennial CEO in an industry that’s traditionally been very male-dominated. Moreover, I feel like our generation faces things like climate change, cannabis legalization and shifting generational tastes that underscore the importance of connecting and building real relationships with our customers.

Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
I’m proud to be involved in every aspect of creating luxury wines that have our name right on the bottle. This includes everything from managing our vineyard and taking care of our customers across the country, to dealing with day-to-day logistics, regulatory and shipping issues you name it.

At the end of the day though, it’s such an honor to continue the four-generation legacy of my family in Napa and building this company with my sisters has been a labor of love.

Looking back on your childhood, what experiences do you feel played an important role in shaping the person you grew up to be?
We all learned so much working with multiple generations of the family, both in the vineyard and around the winery. The value of hard work, the importance of treating everyone with respect and of conducting ourselves in a manner worthy of both our name and legacy – it’s something I think about every day as we craft Aloft and Dark Matter.
