Conversations with Ian Michael

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ian Michael.

Hi Ian, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been into producing music since about 2008 when I was putting the sounds together for my band on Garageband on my dad’s computer at the time, I took so much interest into the artistry of producing that I continued honing in on my craft throughout high school and decided I’d pursue making records as a full-on profession. I headed to Austin, got my degree in Audio Production, and started my business the same month as graduation. I built my home studio out of a spare apartment bedroom, made acoustic treatment, gathered and assembled the gear I needed and started working with clients right off the bat! It’s been such an awesome journey so far writing with artists in person or remotely via the internet. I’m so grateful to create amazing music for artists!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No big struggles so far, I’m still pretty early in the game compared to other full time producer/engineers, but I’m ready to adapt to any challenges I run into along the way! Right now, I’m just focused on building a strong foundation and getting my systems established to grow as time goes on!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I think it’s important in this industry to establish a solid niche and branding around specialty. Since I’ve started the business, I’ve been experimenting with new ways to project my brand of producing and mixing to the people that need my sound the most. My style and vibe of songwriting is based around an organic feel, driven by groovy bass, punchy saturated drums, vintage synthesis and colorful dynamic vocals. Genres I incorporate are in the indie-pop, soul, and hip-hop vein, but I’m ALWAYS trying to play with expectations and create a signature vibe I and my artists can’t find anywhere else.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I’m always looking to work with serious artists that want to have a sound that turns heads. Anyone can inquire to work on their project with me through my website (looknorthrecordings.com) in the “Work With Me” tab! I’m also on Instagram (@looknorthrecordings) Tiktok (@ianputdatstankonit) and YouTube (Look North Recordings)!
