Today we’d like to introduce you to Hazel English.
Hi Hazel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Sydney, Australia and from a young age, I was very into music but I never really saw myself as a performer. When I was 16, I taught myself to play the guitar and from there, I started learning covers and then eventually began to write my own songs. I moved to the U.S. in 2013 to study abroad and continued to play music locally at open mics and cafes. Eventually, I started releasing songs online and began to focus on becoming a full-time musician. It was a process that kind of slowly revealed itself to me, and I’m still addicted to making music all these years later.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think that the times that were the greatest challenges were often when I took the greatest risks and it ended up paying off, but it was certainly scary at the time. Moving to another country where you don’t know anybody is difficult in itself but ended up being the best decision of my life. The same with any other choice I made where I put myself out there and felt vulnerable. It’s uncomfortable but it can yield rewarding outcomes.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a musician and songwriter and I guess you could say my music lives in the dream pop world. I put my heart and soul into my art and work really hard to put out music that I am proud of. It is gratifying to see the process of an album through from the start to the finish line and it’s always an interesting and enlightening journey.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The Artists Way is a really great resource for creatives and it has helped me when I sometimes feel stuck or if I get writer’s block. I read a lot and I try to engage with other art forms such as film and visual art, surrounding myself with creative things is pivotal to inspiring me to create my own work.
