Conversations with Cristina Aragon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Aragon.

Hi Cristina, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have spent the majority of my life living in Los Angeles, California. At a very young age, my mother and I both moved from Oaxaca, Mexico to California to be with my father who was already living in the U.S. Being as young as I was, I easily adjusted to a new way of life, my mother on the other hand didn’t have an easy time getting accustomed to the changes. We lived comfortably up until I was around the age of 12, that was when my mother became very ill. I instantly became her caretaker, and I can easily say those were some of the toughest moments of my life. She was diagnosed with high blood pressure, depression and anxiety to name a few. My mother was immediately prescribed medication that only worsened her symptoms, and as time went by she turned her focus from synthetic drugs to natural and traditional remedies and healing modalities.

The moment she shifted her focus from synthetic drugs and treating her symptoms to healing her spirit and the root of her own issues, was the moment I understood that we were more than just our physical bodies. Shortly after she went on to seek help from a Curandera. For those that don’t know what a Curandera/Curandero is, they are Native Medicine Women and Men who use traditional plants and remedies to help treat dis-ease on a mental, emotional and spiritual level rather than just physically. Natural remedies and limpias (spiritual cleanses) aren’t out of the ordinary in our culture. In fact, I grew up with my mother always treating my discomforts with traditional home remedies using the assistance of plants and herbs, so when she turned to a Curandera, I felt hopeful. All I wanted was for her to feel better and for her to be herself again. During the evening of my mothers healing, I remember the Curandera took my mother to different places in the city where she had experienced trauma as a means to heal whatever it was my mother didn’t fully process during the times she experienced any fear, pain, or heartache. She was going back to these places to retrieve and restore parts of herself that had been left dormant during her traumatic experiences. They said many different prayers, called upon our ancestors for help and assistance, and afterwards left food at all the different places they visited as an offering for the spirit’s help.

After they were finished, we all came home and ate some of our traditional food and feasted as a way of co-existing with our ancestors after a long night of healing. That evening is till this day one of the most powerful memories I have as a child. I was so intrigued by everything that had happened and I remember wanting to feel closer to where I came from and who I was. I wanted to understand how one could heal themselves on a spiritual, emotional, mental and physical level. As I got older, my mother’s dis-ease improved from what it had been, and I became consumed by work without having any sustainable goals at the time. I remember I began to feel a calling towards something greater than myself and as I came into womanhood, I eventually experienced my first heartbreak. It was as though it had happened as a means to realign me with the exact question I had asked myself when I was just 12 years old, “how can I heal my spirit?” I remember reading The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and my whole world changed. I understood that I easily had the ability to alchemize and shift my pain in order to heal my broken heart and I did. I healed my heart and understood that healing was something I would have to keep doing an endless amount of times in this lifetime.

A couple years later I began practicing Reiki and Sound Healing which then led me to learning more about our traditional remedies and I began to create my own healing techniques. I eventually started practicing different holistic modalities on my mother to help her dis-ease and it not only healed mother-daughter trauma, but we became closer and built a stronger relationship. She, along with my angel and spirit guide (my uncle who I saw transition into the spirit realm when I was really young) have been the biggest staples of encouragement in my life. I eventually started assisting other people in their healing journey with the use of Reiki, Sound Therapy and Rituals. I have been slowly growing, evolving, and sharing more of my work with others and though I truly enjoy working with groups of people, guiding meditations, hosting workshops and events, I can say that there is nothing like sitting down with someone and working one on one with them. I love what I do and I believe that I am here to do more of this “work” and hone my powers in-order to help the world. Though I’ve experienced a lot, I truly believe these experiences were meant to happen to help make who I am today.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Life teaches you many lessons, and it’s always reminding me that I don’t always need to have everything figured out. Things are constantly changing and nothing is ever certain but change itself. I’ve learned the importance of staying true to myself and honoring where I come from and what sets me apart. My experiences have shaped me into who I am today, and I believe that they will continue to shape me into more aligned versions of myself as I get older. I’m constantly healing. As soon as I have worked through something, something else comes along asking to be worked through. Life’s lessons have been my greatest teacher. I don’t condemn my experiences, I honor them and am appreciative of them for teaching me what people can’t. I’ve experienced betrayal, heartbreak, childhood trauma but I’ve been lucky to have had the courage to have dug deep enough through my shadows in order to have found value in my experiences. It has all helped me become the healer and person I am today.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Reiki and Sound Therapy practitioner. Reiki is an alternative healing modality and form of meditation that originated in Japan in the late 1800’s by Mikao Usui. It consists of energy transfer from the hands of the practitioner to the client. It is believed that we are beings made up of light, and when our life force energy is weakened or affected, we begin to experience blockages which can later create dis-ease within our body and spirit. Reiki assists in restoring one’s life-force energy helping maintain a healthy mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual balance. Reiki has been recorded to help reduce pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue amongst much more. Sound Therapy on the other hand not only works on a spiritual level but on a cellular level as well. It helps restore damaged DNA, improves mental health and diseases such as high blood pressure and treats many other imbalances. It is an ancient healing modality that has been practiced for centuries and is being used more and more in today’s society.

Aside from these two amazing modalities, I have been spending more time bonding with plants and herbs, as they offer an immense amount of healing as well. Through this, I have created a deeper connection between myself, nature and my overall environment and relationship with the Earth. I’ve learned so much from my mother growing up and always remember to honor my roots because a lot, if not all of my healings are performed with the assistance of my ancestors and techniques I learned from my mother growing up. I enjoy being able to share all of these gifts with the world and am honored to be an extension and carrier of these beautiful modalities which I honor and truly respect. I believe every healers performance is unique and shaped around what they’ve learned and their experiences with the medicine they choose to practice. This has been true for me as I’ve taken what I’ve learned from my traditions and culture and have used it to help heal myself and to assist others in their healing journey as well.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that honesty and integrity truly matter. It’s important to have honest intentions and to have our hearts in the right place in order to be “successful.” As long as one’s intentions, energy, and hearts are pure, that will be seen and felt by the universe and create an abundant flow of energy to fulfill one’s needs in life, as well as mine. I believe that respect and boundaries are also important to my success. People will see your gifts and either want them for themselves or try to profit or benefit off of you in some way shape or form. I’ve experienced that and learned that setting clear boundaries has been very important throughout my journey. I think that anyone can be successful, but honesty and pure intentions will be what maintains that “success,” otherwise I believe one has betrayed their highest self. Success isn’t just about financial gains but one’s ability to have created something beautiful and meaningful that not only benefits the individual but the world around him.
