Conversations with Anthony Aguilar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anthony Aguilar.

Hi Anthony, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started one day with me wanted a coffin shaped shelf, I was never any good with working with wood, I’m a metal guy myself, so one day I said, it can’t be that hard, after about my 5th try, I got a pretty decent shaped coffin, made a couple for friends and figured hey why not keep practicing maybe I can make other stuff, slowly I bought wood working tools and making templates of different shapes, every other day I was making stuff new just trying to better my self making cleaner cuts, and working with different types of woods, I eventually made enough shelf’s and decided I try and sell my stuff at an event, the awesome guys over at the Halloween depot in the city of southgate gave me my chance and let me debut my self as witch coven creations for the first time, I’ve since bettered my skill and make all kinds of stuff now, and I also make custom displays for other vendors for their pop up events, there’s almost nothing I can’t make now with a smooth piece of wood.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, I was never any good at carpentry or anything that has to do with wood, it took me a little while before I got the hang of it, learning how different woods cut and finishes, trashing almost done shelfs cause I cut the wrong piece, it’s not like metal where I can just weld it and I start fresh, my grampa is a master carpenter so you woulda thought some of that woulda passed on to me lol I was always into metal working so I never even tried to do any kind of woodwork.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I have a regular day job Monday through Friday 5am to 3pm every day and I’m on call after I leave, I run the maintenance shop for steel company in the city of commerce, I repair heavy machinery, forklifts semi-trucks, you name it I fix it, I can’t honestly say I specialize any anything when people ask me what do I do, I just say I do a lot of everything, I don’t think I’m really known for anything specific other then always having projects, I’m proud of my self for the things I’ve done, the things I’ve learned and taught my self, I’m doing things now that never in my self did I think I would be doing, I like to think outside the box, I always try and do what everyone else isn’t doing, or if someone’s doing it already, I always try and aim higher, bigger and better.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Be humble, don’t forget where you came from and don’t forget who was there for you, I like to keep my standards high with anything I do, I always tell myself, if I was buying this what would I look for, I feel like that’s what contributes to my success is putting out a good product.
