Community Highlights: Meet Timothy Bailey of AMCR Institute, Inc.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Bailey.

Hi Timothy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
An amazing uncle had type 1 diabetes. He lived a full life that was shortened by complications of diabetes, which included blindness and kidney failure. As a teen, it seemed like there must be a way to avoid the severe effects of type 1 diabetes. After completing medical school and training in Internal Medicine, I had the opportunity to pursue further a 3-year Endocrinology fellowship, mentored and encouraged to pursue diabetes research by the eminent clinician scientist, Dr. Harold Lebovitz, MD.

After living my entire young life in New York City, opportunity called from San Diego. I joined the practice founded by Dr. Chandrasekhar Varma, MD in Escondido. We spent 31 wonderful years together, until his retirement this year.

Medicine had made great progress in the treatment of diabetes since my uncle’s death, but there were so many opportunities to do better. Initially Dr. Varma and I conducted research as an important part of our clinical practice. Our patients have always had the opportunity to participate in clinical trials, where they can help to bring needed new treatments to the market.

Clinical research is highly regulated to ensure the highest safety to volunteers. This has greatly grown in complexity, and AMCR Institute was born in 2007 out of our medical practice to focus solely on clinical research. Our new clinical research company started with just 2 employees—myself and Laura Bedolla. Laura had been the office manager of our practice as well as a research coordinator. Now she transitioned to Chief Administrator Officer managing both the administrative and operational function of our new company which over the ensuing years has grown to nearly 50 employees. Since 2008, my wife Celeste Bailey, PhD has been working in our company as Chief Scientific Officer. Recently she was the principal investigator on a human factors trial and the results were selected for oral presentation (the most prestigious position) at the 2021 scientific sessions of the American Diabetes Association.

We focus exclusively on diabetes and other metabolic conditions. Our particular expertise is with medical devices and earlier phase medications. We also have experience testing medical software and conducting human factors studies. The latter is particularly important, as a wonderful product has the potential to fail if the person prescribed it does not use it properly.
I’ve had the opportunity to publish our research in medical journals and have been asked to present these findings at meetings nationally and internationally.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Driving both our medical practice and clinical research companies is our vision of “accelerating access to treatments that changes lives”.

Critical to achieving access is growth. We have increased both staff and space to accommodate the needs of our clients. Growing a business, particularly in healthcare, can present many challenges. I am grateful for the support of my family and staff to have accomplished this.

Most recently, Covid-19 invaded our business. The pandemic suddenly and dramatically reduced our space (due to the need for distancing), and created additional stress for staff and patients (due to masking, frustration, and fear). Requirements and government mandates changed frequently and we had to divert many resources to keep everyone safe and remain compliant with all regulations.

My increased workload has led me to make an important decision—to promote one of our talented executives, Carmen Ostermeier, to lead the company as President and for me to continue as CEO and Founder. This key step of leadership transfer will enable further effective company growth.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about AMCR Institute, Inc.?
Please tell us more about your business or organization: The work we do at AMCR Institute, and the medical practice is a collaborative process with our community, patients and study volunteers that strengthens the well-being of our society through research that benefits us all with better health. It offers additional ways to detect, diagnose, and reduce the risk of diseases, their treatment and management in a safe research environment.

What should we know?
Clinical Research provides access to innovative treatment and devices that aren’t available yet. Contributing to research may save lives in the future. Everyone can take an active role and add to their regular medical care without the necessity of health insurance or any copayment. Research provides time and education with and from healthcare professionals that medical practices cannot offer.

What do you do, what do you specialize in / what are you known for?
Our AMazing CRew cares deeply about every patient, and every project. We are specialized in diabetes, obesity, and fatty liver studies. And in the light of current events, we offered our deep research expertise to companies that develop COVID vaccines and treatments too. We take our social responsibility seriously. Volunteers, sponsors, partners, and staff enjoy working together in an environment of mutual respect that fosters personal growth and optimal health. We strive to be the best at what we do – as a team.

What sets you apart from others?
We have a very flat organizational structure (compared to other competitors) and well thought through internal processes established, enabling us to act in an agile and timely way. We practice ‘transparency’, what sounds like common sense, but admittedly needs to be appreciated more in our business environment.

What are you most proud brand wise?
What started as a medical practice named Advanced Metabolic Care & Research initially, evolved into a patient-centric, community involving and society serving local clinical research center additionally.
Fourteen years of deep research experience enabled us to offer help when it was needed the most by mankind. We take pride in having contributed to both – COVID Vaccine developments and COVID treatment studies besides our uninterrupted work in diabetes, obesity, and NAFLD/NASH.

What do you want our readers to know about your brand, offerings, services, etc?
If YOU want to make a difference in your life and for others that have been affected by diabetes, obesity, or fatty liver, reach out to us or other research sites. Having research opportunities within geographically reasonable reach is a blessing. Our AMazing CRew is looking forward to guide you and to introduce you to suitable study opportunities. Show your interest, we are here for you: www.myAMCR.com

Who else deserves credit in your story?
There is no improvement in medical knowledge, treatments, or management of diseases without people who contribute their time and effort to clinical research. A big shout out to all our highly valued and appreciated volunteers. Your altruism is basis for medical success stories. Thank you, all.
