Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaina Denny.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
In mid-2017, I returned to Los Angeles after living and working in China for almost four years. On the day of my arrival, I got my Miniature Dachshund, Poppy. Though I was working from home at this time, I realized immediately I was unable to give Poppy the mental stimulation, attention, and socialization that she required. I looked into the dog walking app services, but it did not give her the off-leash socialization that she desired. I stumbled upon a dog daycare but was met with many inconveniences and letdowns.
About a year or so later, I kept thinking about this pain point I was having as a modern dog parent. I spoke with many others who had a similar experience. I ended up partnering with Greer, my now co-founder, to solve the problem of inconvenient and outdated dog daycare.
We teamed up with Science-Inc, a venture studio and fund, in late 2018 and began working on Dogdrop full-time in 2019. Our mission is to provide the best possible care to dogs and their parents. For us, that means delivering the best quality of care to dogs through our well-trained team, technology, and convenient locations.
Dogdrop is now offering franchise opportunities so we can add even more convenient locations through high-caliber operators. Dogdrop will be expanding in Denver and Miami in 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Like any start-up, we have faced struggles along the way. We did launch a retail business in January 2020 after all! Operating during COVID-19 gave us a unique set of challenges to face that we did not anticipate. Understanding an ever-evolving set of changing laws and doing our best to support our employees/team were a few. No challenge was managed with perfection, but the lessons we have learned to build a sustainable business and set our team up for success has made those challenges worthwhile.
Our north star has always been to deliver an unparalleled dog care experience and to see through any challenges along the way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Dogdrop. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Dogdrop is a women and queer-founded, venture-backed start-up based in Los Angeles with the mission to provide the best possible care to dogs and experience for their parents. Their super convenient, top-quality physical locations and monthly memberships are designed to give urban pet parents more flexible, on-demand access to quality dog care anytime, anywhere, with a brand they can know and trust no matter what city they’re in powered by technology. Dogdrop offers franchise opportunities and will be expanding to Denver and Miami in 2023.
Dogdrop is designed for the modern dog parent and is focused around convenience & flexibility: quick stops, fast curbside, memberships, quality care, real-time updates, and tech-enabled.
What matters most to you?
Dogdrop is focused on delivering an experience that has yet to be seen in the pet care space. We have seen many innovations and high-touch experiences in human services, but in non-vet services, there has been a lack of this focus. To us, a high-quality experience is delivering care to dogs with their health, behavior, and personalization in mind while being able to give a new generation of pet parents the compassion they deserve.
