Today we’d like to introduce you to Sathya Chey.
Sathya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story started as many young Cambodian American stories do: born in a refugee camp in Thailand after my family survived the Cambodian Genocide. We came to America with little resources, struggling as immigrants to become accustomed to American culture while trying to support our family. I grew up in Long Beach, surrounded by gang violence and low-income families with little parental oversight, resulting in young mothers and the premature death of friends.
Once I became a mother at 20, I was inspired to give my daughter the childhood I had hoped for myself. When she was three months old, I was motivated to finish my degree and pursue studies in wealth management. Growing up, I learned that money does not buy happiness, but it could buy you peace of mind and a foundation to pursue your dreams. I was driven to help uplift others rise to their greatest potential. It is that altruistic goal, I believe, which led to the success I’ve had in my career.
I now am the Managing Partner and Co-Founder of my own firm, Arise Private Wealth. The road was arduous because I not only had to overcome self-limiting beliefs, but I also had fewer resources than most entering this profession. In addition, being a young immigrant woman, I sadly encountered discrimination.
My goal to help others has permeated all areas of my life. I am a mentor to those interested in pursuing a career in finance as well as those at the start of their careers. I serve on the board of several non-profit organizations, and in addition, I founded a sound healing and meditation band ─ Heart of Ananda. We offer donation-based events to help uplift those facing difficulties or struggling with obstacles in their lives. I believe there is space and value for all of us to rise to our highest potential and my life’s goal is to contribute to that upliftment in this world.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Arise Private Wealth?
My business partner and I both came from humble beginnings. We know first-hand that discipline, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to “arise” and create a new life is possible. Arise, to us, means to ascend beyond our past, overcome challenges, control our destiny, and consistently strive to be a better person. That’s why we chose to name our company Arise Wealth Management. Arise is symbolic for how we work with our clients. We empower our clients to live their best lives – to not just be happy but to be fulfilled. We strive to be our client’s personal CFO and are part of every financial decision. I try to hold my clients accountable to their goals and what it takes to help them achieve them. It’s similar to why you hire a personal trainer: to have someone rooting for you, creating a plan, and reminding you to stay the course.
I think what sets Arise Private Wealth apart is passion — the passion I have for helping clients, but moreover, we are passionate about specializing in Sustainable, Responsible, and Impact (SRI) investments. I believe you can do well AND do good at the same time. I ask my clients if they are “conscious consumers,” choosing to buy products and supporting brands that are working to reduce their environmental footprint, invest in local communities, have products that address a social need or increase diversity in their leadership. If the answer is yes, then investing in this way would likely be of interest to them.
