Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah & Ezra Reich. Them and their team share their story with us below:
We met in Sweden in 2016 when Ezra was working on music production in Stockholm where Sarah lived. She moved to Los Angeles in 2017 and that’s when we got married. While Sarah was waiting for her initial green card, we conceived of the idea of bringing the Bullar (the National pastry of Sweden) to the US. Shortly after that, we started Bulle Bakery in December 2017. We quickly built a large and devoted following of American and Swedish customers for our made to order buns. After several years of serving the Los Angeles community, we decided to move to Lake Arrowhead, CA where we are currently operating. We were able to maintain many LA customers who visit the area as well as a new devoted clientele base up here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Initially it was a very smooth organic process and the business grew quite quickly. We even began discussions with investors to open a factory that would have opened up in mid-2020. Due to the extreme closures and restrictions LA county had at that time, we had to change our plans and that is why we are still operating as a cottage food business at this time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We are specialized in Swedish sweet buns (Bullar which means buns in Swedish). We hand make them to order and deliver everything daily fresh. Our ingredients are the highest quality and the buns take 4-5 hours to make. Many of our loyal Swedish customers have told us for years that our buns are some of the best they have ever had even compared to top Swedish bakeries. The pastry chef from acclaimed restaurant Bestia was a returning customer of ours, among other celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Swedish star soccer player Zlatan Ibrahimovitch, hockey players from the LA Kings, and Oscar-winning film composer Ludwig Goransson. In 2020 LA magazine listed us as one of the top holiday pastries in LA. We offer the three most traditional flavors, cinnamon, cardamom and vanilla all year round as well as Saffron buns with Marzipan filling during the Christmas Season.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
We were about to take a risk when we were offered investment in opening a factory in mid-2020. We are happy we did not do that and stayed flexible as we are now.
