Community Highlights: Meet Sara Saxonberg of Pachamama Inspired Landscape

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Saxonberg.

Hi Sara, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My roots are in the wild—literally. I spent my early childhood in the aspen groves of Colorado, barefoot and building miniature worlds from sticks and the abundant wildflowers in my backyard, fully immersed in the rhythm of the seasons. When my family moved to coastal Los Angeles at age seven, the shift was disorienting. The residential landscape—postage-stamp lawns and little else—felt unfamiliar. I remember telling my mom, “I just don’t know how to play here.”

Years later, while working in farm-to-table kitchens and sourcing produce from the Santa Monica Farmers Market, I reconnected with the Earth in a new way—through food. I began growing herbs and vegetables, rediscovering my relationship with soil, and something awakened in me. Pachamama Inspired grew from that reconnection—and from a desire to raise my son in a way that honored the land, while building a meaningful career rooted in healing, reciprocity, and presence.

Today, every project is a continuation of that journey—an invitation for others to remember their connection to the Earth and reimagine what their outdoor spaces can be.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—and I wouldn’t want it to be. Building something regenerative in a city designed for speed and consumption is inherently challenging. It takes time, intention, and a willingness to slow down. There’s also emotional labor in asking people to shift how they see their land—from commodity to community, from control to collaboration.

Every client comes with a different story and a different threshold for “wildness.” But that’s part of the magic. Even when someone starts out just wanting a “pretty yard,” if we can help them fall in love with the birds, butterflies, and beauty outside their window, something shifts. That’s the seed. And from there, connection grows.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Pachamama Inspired, we offer full-service landscape design with a focus on creating beautiful, functional outdoor spaces that are tailored to each client’s lifestyle and site conditions. From planting plans and hardscape layouts to outdoor living areas and edible gardens, our work blends timeless design principles with ecological awareness.

We specialize in waterwise, low-maintenance landscapes that support pollinators, conserve resources, and often include herbs, fruit trees, and vegetables. Whether you’re looking to transform a front yard, backyard, or full property, we design spaces that are both practical and deeply meaningful.

What sets us apart is our commitment to creating gardens that nurture both the land and the people who live on it. Every project is a collaboration between the site and its stewards, and we believe outdoor spaces can be places of healing, joy, and connection.

We’re proud to be part of a movement redefining what landscapes can offer—spaces that feel good, do good, and grow better over time.

Any big plans?
Looking ahead, we’re exploring how our offerings might evolve to serve both California and Colorado—two landscapes that have shaped my story and deeply inform our work. We envision the possibility of traveling workshops and expanded educational offerings that help people in these climate impacted regions—and potentially others—create landscapes that are not only waterwise and climate-resilient, but also rooted in joy, belonging, and reconnection with the land.

In a time of climate uncertainty and fractured connection—between people, place, and even ourselves—we believe gardens can do more than just survive; they can help us remember how to thrive. A well-tended outdoor space becomes more than a refuge from instability; it becomes a site of restoration, relationship, and renewal. Our work is about helping people remember what’s possible—one rewilded, regenerative space at a time.
