Community Highlights: Meet Sally We of Hangari House

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sally We.

Hi Sally, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Like every AAPI immigrant, the longing for delicious authentic Korean food was for real. Asian markets and restaurants didn’t come close to what I sought. For my sister and me, my mom’s food is the best. Whenever my sister and I got to eat her food, it was an experience; feeling the energy, smelling the aromatics, and then taking the first bite, it all felt like you were transported to a little hut in South Korea, enjoying every moment. The large spread of authentic Korean cuisine is what I grew up with, ban-chans of various ferments, flavors, and colors, a wholesome, hearty soup, and a good, tasty bowl of fluffy rice. The different thing about all of my mom’s cooking? Her recipes have always been naturally vegan.

After years of having my mom’s authentic Korean food that is naturally all VEGAN and going to restaurants to be disappointed with the non-vegan options, the idea came to mind. We needed to showcase Korean food that was authentic, delicious, and good for us and especially to our environment, so came Hangari House, sharing my mom’s original Korean recipes and partnering with my sister to spread our family spreads!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Food Business are tough and then you do it with your family, of course there are challenges. Common obstacles can include “training” your family members and having them understand your concept and execution. Learning to work with each other is a whole different process. However, despite all the basic obstacles and challenges we have/had to overcome, I still get to hang out with my mom and sister, hear mom’s stories from Korea and get to cook and learn all of our families’ recipes. Now I feel like I’m in the experience!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Currently, we are manifesting our storefront, so we are enjoying our nightly markets, pop-ups and farmer’s markets.
