Community Highlights: Meet Rachel Silverman of Silverman Movements

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Silverman.

Hi Rachel, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a New Hampshire native turned Santa Monica local. When I was sixteen, I was in four car accidents, three of which were totals. From there, I was in physical therapy for a long time to get myself back to being able to move without pain. After that point, I realized how important it was to maintain physical movement for my overall wellness.

I finished my physical therapy and returned to my passion at the time which was modeling. This got me started working out with personal trainers, and the inspiration gained from the individual attention to my workouts ignited me. Over the years, I’ve invested the time and money to work with many different trainers on my fitness. At sixteen, I graduated early and by seventeen, I left NH for beautiful Los Angeles and I’ve been a loyal Westsider over the past decade. You may even know me as the bar manager at Sonny Mcleans, Santa Monica’s staple “Red Sox Nation West” pub. Or as Los Angeles’s reigning Bartender Champion for Heineken. Let me tell you, I’ve enjoyed it, especially all the people I’ve had the opportunity to meet and talk to. In 2015, while working at the pub one day, I saw this unreal trainer, Bill Zipp, walk-in. An ex-parachute fighter, he looked beyond fierce. He is the best boxing coach I’ve ever seen in my life. He asked me if I would like to try boxing. Before I knew it, he had me boxing a couple of times a week, strengthening muscles that I didn’t know I had.

In particular, he changed my entire mindset and taught me how to own my space. I started breaking the taps while pouring beers, not knowing my strength. I walked taller and I felt immensely better about myself. With that, I’ve realized that I really just enjoy making someone else feel better too. I’ve spent half my life working in the service industry and my favorite part about it is the connections I’ve made and the chance to brighten peoples’ day. I could see that not only did people need to be able to relax, go out and be social, but they also needed to balance that with taking care of their physical selves. Last January, Steven Kates of Brentwood, Bill Zipp’s former gym partner and an ultimate legend celebrity trainer, began training me. I was feeling depressed and very stuck at the time. He held me accountable and pushed me to get going. I had been working out, but nowhere near to this extent. Steve got me to start running outdoors five days a week, I became addicted to my outdoor time. Once I paired the running with our gym sessions, I could feel my mental wellness escalate along with my physical wellness. He inspired me to get my personal trainer certification I was feeling ready to make a change. It motivates me to motivate others. I began schooling at the National Academy of Sports Medicine the day after shutdown and was determined to make it a success. Upon finishing my certification, I hit the ground running to get my business moving and start inspiring my clients!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Revisiting school after a decade away was definitely a challenge. I knew I wanted to become a certified personal trainer and that I had a passion for wellness through physical exercise and nutrition. Originally, I was aiming to get my training to be able to work at a gym. Well, as luck would have it the gyms were shut down so I began to reflect: “What has made me the happiest about fitness?” The answer is that I love working out, being outdoors and soaking in the city that I fell in love with, breathing in the fresh air and feeling the beach wind. That’s what gets me motivated to move. As this became clear to me, I decided to obtain my outdoor fitness permit for the parks and Santa Monica beach. I slowly began to gather more and more equipment for my own outdoor fitness sessions. Now I can bring the gym to anyone and we can work out in the open air. I like challenges, so I continue my education at NASM for nutrition and I also study herbalism.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
