Community Highlights: Meet Philip Vigeant of Pro8mm

Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Vigeant

Hi Philip, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 1977 I started working for an independent film suppler as a part time bookkeeper. The company Super 8 Sound Inc was in Cambridge Ma. and had a thriving business selling film making equipment to individuals and film school based on the Super 8 film format. After graduating Bentley College with a degree in Accounting I left Super 8 Sound to pursue my career in Accounting. A few years later in 1981 I happen to drop by Super 8 Sound to visit old friends only to find out that the once thriving enterprise had been financially devastated by the introduction of Video and Video Editing equipment. I decided to try and help out by leading the firm through Bankruptcy . One year later the company was still insolvent and the owners decided to dissolve the business . In one crazy moment and leap of faith I decided to quit my Accounting job and purchase the assets to restart the business. Over the next 40 year the company grew into the leading resource for the use of Super8 Film.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
To follow your dream you have to be willing to put in the effort and gamble with the financial commitment. We (Me and my wife Rhonda and two small children) had to leave where we grew up in New England , and everyone and everything we was familiar with to come to California because this is the center of the Film Universe. During one of the economic depressions we invested heavily in and idea to remanufacture 35mm film into Super8 film. We called the film Pro8mm film. When the economy turn it put us in the forefront of our industry. During another downturn I mortgaged my home to finance the purchase of the first High Definition scanner for 8 and Super 8 film. The machine cost 1 million dollars but it bridged the world of 8mm filming with the growing world of High Definition and made it possible for thousands of projects to incorporate 8 film. Today we have Scanners that can scan to 6.5K resolution.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
