Community Highlights: Meet Neela Sethi of Jaanuu and Valencia Pediatric Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neela Sethi

Hi Neela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey started at Camp Ronald McDonald for children with cancer. I was volunteering as a camp counselor the summer before junior year of college. I remember being moved by each child’s story and was curious as to how they were each diagnosed. The volunteer Pediatrician asked me if I had ever considered a career in medicine and the rest is history.

I felt like Pediatrics chose me in a way, and once you receive that call, it’s hard to ignore. In fact many Pediatricians believe that Pediatrics actually chose them.

When I was a third year medical student I was asked to wear scrubs to shadow a surgeon in the operating room. I was handed an ill-fitting, unisex pair of scrubs and was mortified.

Being a fashionista my entire life I thought about designing a scrub line that actually fit well and functioned even better. I took a giant leap and decided to start Jaanuu, a fashion-forward medical apparel company with the help of my brother. We just celebrated our 10 year anniversary and I could not be more proud of what we have created.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It is never a smooth road. To be honest I truly believe that the learning and growth comes from the hard times. Some of the worst moments of my life have taught me just how strong I am.
I have also seen that the people that stand by you in those tough moments are the ones that really matter.
Character development comes from highs and lows, wins and losses, and happiness and sorrow.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Jaanuu is one the first medical apparel companies that has offered fashion-forward scrubs in the market. We pushed what was possible with skinny pants, joggers, gold zippers, form fitting tops and bottoms, and fabric that moved with the body. When we first launched, people couldn’t believe that what we created were actually scrubs and now we have been replicated by other companies more times than I can even count.
I am most proud of our brand inclusivity and that we truly stand for the health care professional. We have brought mental health to the table to discuss, equality in the workplace, discrimination in hospitals and make sure to really listen to our consumer. We are evolving to striving to be better everyday.
We are a brand for the people.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is defined as being the best version of myself everyday and truly leading with love.
Some days I need rest and I give myself that. Some days I want to conquer the world’s heaviest issues, and I tackle that.
But with whatever the day brings I lead with love.
What will make the world better? How can I be of service? What would I want to be offered in the situation and can I do that for others? What is my heart telling me? Am I seeing the other person’s side of the issue? Am I being compassionate?
These are all the questions I use to make sure that I am truly successful everyday.
