Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Vonk.
Hi Nathan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sullivan Goss Gallery began in Pasadena in 1984. In 1991, the gallery moved up to Santa Barbara and in the intervening years has become one of the largest and most respected galleries between LA and San Francisco. We focus on Modern and Contemporary American art, but we have works that go back to the 1800s. We have three exhibition spaces, which feature a revolving slate of solo and group shows. Including the works we have in our back room, there are more than 2000 works of art in the building.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
After working at the gallery for nearly a decade, I took over ownership 6 years ago. In that time we have been through the devastating Thomas Fire, the Montecito mudslide, and the COVID pandemic… so no, it hasn’t been a smooth ride. However, we have built a very strong community of local and national collectors who have made the road remarkably smooth, considering.
As you know, we’re big fans of Sullivan Goss Gallery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Though we are a high-end fine art retail space, we work very hard to make sure everyone who walks in our door feels welcome and comfortable enough to ask questions about what we show and why we show it. This is a place where people who are just getting beginning to get involved in the art world can feel right at home with collectors who globetrot around from art fair to art fair. There are great pieces here for new collectors, and there are things here that could be trophy pieces in a large collection. Our goal is to help turn as many new collectors into seasoned veterans who are still visiting us 10 or 20 years down the road.
What makes you happy?
I am happiest when I have successfully found a perfect match for a work of art and a collector. I love so many of the pieces that come through here, but I can’t have them all for myself. So, when I know a piece is going to a home where it will be cherished, it feels amazing.
