Community Highlights: Meet Mike Staver of The Staver Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Staver

Hi Mike, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I wanted to be a fighter pilot since I was a little boy. It never happened. I instead ending up getting a business degree I didn’t want and then a master’s in counseling psychology. As a result of that I needed to do intern work for my masters. I was a business executive by day and in the afternoons worked in a hospital as an intern. Big office, successful career then in the afternoon a grunt at a hospital on the psychiatric unit. I later was offered a job at a new private mental health hospital where I had THE best boss I have ever had. One day she suggested that I teach 1–2-hour seminar on something. The physicians were getting very small crowds. Like 10 -20. I agreed to do it if I could teach what I wanted and had the same budget as the doctors. She agreed. I decided to teach on, How to Recover from a Broken Relationship. I had just gone through a divorce and thought I might add some hope and perspective. 120 people showed up. A woman came up to me to thank me. She was the president of a PR firm. She told me, “you could do this for a living.” I said, “I can make money speaking?” she said, “yes.” That was the start of it. I began doing engagement’s for the hospital and one day someone asked me what I charged. I laughed and made up a number.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No not at all. I auditioned for a seminar company when I first started. They sent my audition to a speech coach and evaluator. She rejected me and told me I lacked the skill and professionalism to make a living in this business. I asked for another chance. The company for the first time in their history gave me a second chance. I worked and worked. Practiced and practiced. Reauditioned. They sent the work to the same evaluator and I got a 100%. Went on to be in the top 10% in the organization.

In 2004 the business had grown to a strong 7 figure highly regarded organization. I has heavily niched working with leaders in residential real estate. When the crash happened in 2008 I nearly lost everything. It was a very dark time. Perseverance and focus got us through. Bloodied and bruised, we navigated it with the help of good people and strategic thinking.

Then, in 2020, Covid decimated the events business. We lost significant speaking revenue. Thankfully we had a robust coaching practice. We decided the first week of COVID that we would commit to helping the hurting not matter what. We pivoted to virtual webinars and developed a coaching certification program to advance our mission to empower others to help the hurting. In the end, we only lost 10% of our revenue by the end of the year because of that commitment.

How do you define success?
Success, to me, is about living a life aligned with your values and purpose. Success is the ability to make a meaningful impact—whether it’s through your work, relationships, or how you show up in the world. It’s about waking up each day knowing you’re contributing to something bigger than yourself, while still finding balance and joy in the everyday moments. Success is a journey, not a destination, and it’s deeply personal. If you’re learning, growing, and staying true to who you are, that’s success.
