Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Wright
Hi Melissa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story has been a bit of a wild ride—starting in LA, I found myself in NYC, where I was bartending, living for the nightlife, and meeting the most fascinating people. I was always drawn to beauty and aesthetics, especially cosmetic tattooing and skin rejuvenation treatments. Surrounded by fashion shows and elite events, I knew I wanted a front-row seat in the beauty world—not just as a spectator but as a creator.
With a passion for the craft, I started training in Cosmetic Tattooing and Fibroblast Skin Tightening, setting up a makeshift studio in my shared apartment. Picture this: half of my bedroom, sectioned off by a curtain, was my salon. I lived with two roommates and hauled my mobile salon setup up and down subway stairs, rain or shine, across Manhattan, and deep into Brooklyn. (If those stairs could talk!)
Eventually, I upgraded to a two-bedroom where I transformed one room entirely into my studio. Then came COVID, and I returned to LA to be closer to family, essentially starting from scratch with only a handful of connections. But, in true “rise and grind” style, I opened my very own salon—not in my apartment this time, but close enough to keep me grounded in the journey. Today, I’m still hustling, growing, and striving to reach new heights!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Oh, where to start? In New York, every day felt like a blend of boot camp and beauty school. Juggling bartending, navigating crazy city schedules, and running a business out of my bedroom wasn’t exactly glamorous. I took clients right there in my tiny room, with a curtain separating my bed from my makeshift salon setup. When I wasn’t working from home, I was taking house calls. Imagine carrying a salon bed up and down subway stairs—rain, snow, or sunshine—then setting it up in someone’s living room like it’s the Ritz!
It was a hustle, but honestly, I kind of loved it. Every house call was a mini adventure, and every client I welcomed into my little home setup was a reminder of how much I loved what I was building—even if it wasn’t ideal.
When I finally upgraded to a bigger apartment and had an actual “room” for my studio, I felt like I’d made it—until COVID changed everything. Moving back to LA meant starting from scratch in a city I hadn’t been rooted in for years. I knew almost no one, which, in the beauty business, is not ideal. But building those connections taught me so much about resilience and reminded me how much I love what I do.
From makeshift studios in my bedroom to house calls and now my very own salon, it’s been a journey of grit, laughter, and more subway-related near-death experiences than I’d like to admit. And, despite all that, here I am—always dreaming bigger!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
When it comes to finding a mentor or building your network, my biggest piece of advice is to treat every outing as a networking opportunity. Whether I’m at a professional event, a casual gathering, or even grabbing coffee, I always stay open to meeting new people and exchanging information. You never know where a connection might lead.
For me, one of the most crucial parts of networking is the follow-up. After meeting someone, I make it a point to reach out, thank them for their time, and explore ways we might collaborate or learn from each other. Following up shows that I value the connection and am serious about building a relationship.
My advice is to remember that every new connection holds value, whether it pays off immediately or later. The more you put yourself out there and genuinely engage with others, the more opportunities will come your way. Networking isn’t just about who you know—it’s about building meaningful relationships that help you grow, both personally and professionally.
