Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Jaramillo.
Hi Mary, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When passion drives a career change… before launching Mary Jaramillo Design, I spent over a decade in retail construction and project management. It was a fast-paced, detail-oriented world that sharpened my eye for structure, planning, and execution. But even then, I found myself continually drawn to the design side of things—the textures, the flow of a space, the little details that brought everything together.
Five years ago, I decided to take on a personal challenge: renovate my own home. It was during that process that my true passion for interior design came to life. I dove deep into learning everything I could—exploring different design styles, materials, and the art of mixing modern elements with vintage charm. I discovered how much I love creating functional, timeless spaces that reflect personality and purpose.
Friends began to take notice. They saw what I had created and trusted me to help with their own home redesigns and remodels. What started as a passion project quickly grew into something more. With their encouragement and my growing portfolio, I realized it was time to fully embrace this calling.
And so, Mary Jaramillo Design was born—founded on a love for beautiful, livable spaces and built on years of hands-on experience, vision, and heart.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Every journey has its challenges, but I’m incredibly grateful to say that mine has been a smooth and rewarding one so far. Transitioning from a career in project management into interior design felt natural, but it still came with its own learning curves—building a business, finding my voice as a designer, and stepping into a more creative, client-facing role.
The biggest challenge has been learning to balance the creative work I love with the behind-the-scenes tasks like invoicing, budget management, and logistics. Separating the two and wearing both hats hasn’t always been easy, but it’s pushed me to grow in ways I didn’t expect. And that growth has made me a better designer, business owner, and partner to my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Mary Jaramillo Design is a full-service interior design studio specializing in interior design that blends function, beauty, and personal style. Whether it’s a full home renovation or a single-room refresh, my goal is always to create spaces that feel timeless, thoughtful, and truly livable. What I’m most proud of, though, are the relationships I’ve built along the way. Many of my clients return to work together again—either to take on new phases of a project or to reimagine other areas of their home. That ongoing trust means everything to me, and it’s the core of what I do.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
The future of interior design is moving away from fleeting trends and shifting toward spaces that feel personal, functional, and enduring. Clients are looking for designs that reflect who they are and will stand the test of time—not just what’s popular right now. There’s a growing focus on sustainability, vintage pieces, and quality materials, as well as a more intentional, long-term approach to the home. Technology will continue to support the process, but at its core, great design will always be about creating meaningful spaces and lasting connections.
