Hi Marvin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As early as I remember I was a born Entrepreneur. The concept of selling a good or a service to monetize and scale had always been an interest of mine. Whether it was selling mixtapes and merchandise as a teen to real estate and auto detailing as an adult, the game was always to be sold. Never logging in 1 day at a “job” after college, my 20s and 30s were dedicated to a whole bunch of trial and error, start ups and failures, seminars and self help books in the graduate school of hard knocks. All this experience ultimately accumulated in help building Birds Auto Detail to what it is today, a 1500+ five star reviewed auto detail business with a fleet of vans to service our clients at their home, or for the clients to pull in to 1 of our 2 locations for paint corrections, buff/polish and ceramic coatings. Birds Detail is an overnight success that took 13 years. My story is a story of the will on refusing to give up in an industry and space where the odds were stacked against us. It is a story of being resourceful with the given resources at hand and building a business one square brick at a time.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing worth its salt cruises on a smooth road in my opinion. I’d say one of the challenges I face is being too optimistic and not pivoting or shifting courses soon enough in some business ventures. Perhaps some time lost, but all the experiences both good and bad works in your favor in the bigger picture. I tend to like to take the stairs in life and though that isn’t a bad thing I’m also learning the value of leveraging others and working smarter.
We’ve been impressed with Birds Auto Detail , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Birds Auto Detail depicts the story of standing out and being #1 in a highly saturated and competitive space. We take tremendous pride in having over 1500+ five star reviews on Yelp/Google. One of the compliments we get the most is that our communication is top notch. Old school foundational practices such as picking up the phone within 3 rings, responding to email and online inquiries in a timely fashion and training our staff to thoroughly explain our scope of work and what to expect on site is something we don’t take for granted. We are also aware of the fact that most people aren’t car enthusiasts and so we have tailored our menu of services to be as simple and universally customer friendly as possible. We like to use the In N Out example; simple menu, quality and consistent goods for a fair and reasonable price. Simple common sense customer service, attention to detail and consistency is the recipe for our success! Teamwork makes the dream work, shout out to my team!
How do you think about luck?
My good luck comes from my parents. I was lucky to have parents that always supported me no matter the venture. They were always willing to roll up their sleeves and pitch in anyway they can. Which is a large part to my success!
