Community Highlights: Meet Lucy Nunez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucy Nunez.

Hi Lucy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Born and raised in Los Angeles, I have been around the beauty industry most of my life. As a child, I remember my mom making her own face masks made of oats, honey, and lemon juice or her famous face scrub made of coarse sea salt and lavender oil. This was normal in my home. I still make the scrub and keep it in my shower. In my early 20’s I decided to go to cosmetology school in search of new opportunities.

Exactly a week after starting school, I was hired as an assistant by one of Los Angeles top estheticians. She took me under her wing and taught me everything I needed to know in order to become a skincare specialist. A couple of years later, I became her head esthetician and then moved on to spa director. Growth has always been important to me, so when I was offered the position to open up a skincare department in a wellness center in the heart of Santa Monica, I jumped on the opportunity. I worked with an incredible team of doctors specializing in bioidentical hormone therapy and taking a holistic approach to help patients heal their hormonal imbalances. It was a wonderful experience and I learned the importance of diet and nutrition in order to age gracefully and live a long healthy life. Vitality is everything! If you treat your body kindly, your skin will reflect that on the outside. In 2010 I felt ready to go on my own and open up my skincare studio and simultaneously launching my Omega Night Restoring Serum. It is surreal to think that 18 years ago, I was a single mom looking for guidance and a prosperous future.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has not been the smoothest. I think every business owner would agree. I opened PIEL in the middle of a recession and started with only a handful of clients. Let’s just say I started from ZERO! The first two years were the toughest. I was investing in a dream and putting all my eggs in that basket. Not only did I feel the pressure of succeeding as a woman, but also a Latina. As I began to see my business grow throughout the years, it gave me the confidence boost I needed to hit the ground running and never look back. Ten years later, I am right where I dreamt I would be when my studio doors first opened. Despite my most recent hurtle dealing with Covid-19 and not working most of the year. My heart is full of gratitude for the obstacles I had to face and grow from, which ultimately continue to mold who I am today.

We’ve been impressed with PIEL by Lucy Nunez, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My specialty has always been focused on becoming a problem skin specialist. I have been the proud owner of PIEL in Studio City for a decade and have dedicated two decades to combining my commitment to plant-based ingredients and a passion for science. My nature-meets-technology approach has made me one of the most sought-out estheticians and experts in the beauty industry today. My non-invasive techniques along with effective skincare products have resulted in healthier glowing skin for everyone. I believe good skin comes from within and strive to bring a clinical approach to all individually tailored treatments combined with a clean diet to heal the body, mind and soul. Most people don’t realize an unhealthy diet and/or a hormonal imbalance can contribute to skin issues such as acne, rosacea and eczema flare ups, discoloration, or dryness and wrinkles that may have larger consequences if not addressed correctly. I give all my clients 100% of myself in hopes they become happier and more confidant in themselves (specially my teens) who are the most impressionable.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe that having a kind and honest heart has contributed to my success. My passion comes from helping those who haven’t been able to find an esthetician or dermatologist who genuinely listens to their needs. That has always been the most important part of my career. Holding someone’s hand while they cry about their painful acne and the many abrasive treatments they have endured themselves to without results can be devastating to most. My job is to walk with all my client’s hand in hand in their journey to better skin and health.
