Today we’d like to introduce you to Kipp Tribble.
Hi Kipp, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started in theatre, performing in many stage productions while also working on in the radio. I quickly transitioned to onscreen work, primarily in feature films. After expanding my onscreen work to include writing, directing, and producing, I sold my first feature internationally and then about a year later, produced and acted in another feature that landed a Blockbuster Video deal. And that’s when I relocated to Los Angeles.
I have since amassed nearly 40 feature film credits as an actor/filmmaker and my company focuses on creating low-cost films for niche audiences. While I do write some of our projects myself, I do love collaborating with others during development. Additionally, our company does acquire scripts of all genres for production as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being in this business is never a smooth road! Things were busy and moving nicely at the beginning and then it hit a lull, which happens in this industry from time to time. The market changed, causing distributors to change and the product they were selling to change. Some went out of business. The way you promoted yourself as an actor changed and everything transitioned to digital. Change happens in all industries, but you have to learn to adapt and change along with it. Sometimes it takes longer than you’d like, but you have to be persistent and willing to learn a new way of operating.
One of the main struggles in making films is securing the proper financing that fits a project, along with assembling the right team. In this industry, in particular, there are many, many fake promises to wade through. Those who claim they have this or that deal, or have a project ready to go, or they want you involved in “this” – whatever their claims may be. It can be tough to weed through the pretenders to get to the legitimate deals, but you get better at recognizing those through experience.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about MRP Entertainment?
Our company is MRP Entertainment, which was rebranded from a previous company we had. The rebranding came about because of a shift in focus on what our company’s mission was and what we were looking to do. We used to not touch the ultra-low budget projects, but now those are the source of our biggest income.
We do projects of all genres but focus on low-cost films with a strong niche audience.
While we sometimes come on as just producers, I do give priority to films that allow us to get heavily involved creatively – be it a great character to embody for myself, or perhaps even something that might be a good fit for me to direct. But if we come on as just producers, then we do everything in our power to give the creator of the project as much control as possible.
We will not get involved in a project unless we know we have a real opportunity to get it made. And we also will not just take a fee as a production company just because it’s easy money – we must believe in the project and feel it has a strong possibility for success.
We are very proud of the fact that we have never lost money on any of our projects.
While we produce our own content, we also offer full production services, too… From development, pre-production, production, and full post-production, or just script editing services – we do it all. We also offer distribution consulting services and can come on board just for distribution. Basically, whatever your needs are, we will likely be able to help you, no matter the budget level!
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I never went to film school. I took an 8mm film class in college and didn’t do well!
Maybe it’s because I never studied and I hate reading instructions, but I prefer just getting my hands on something and diving in and then failing enough times until I get part of it right. And then another part of it right, and on and on until I get it all right. That to me is the best way to learn: by failing and learning NOT to do that again.
