Community Highlights: Meet Kate Melton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Melton.

Hi Kate, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my journey in the entertainment industry at 11 as a child actor. I worked for many years as an actress as well as a casting assistant, and eventually I got a job at an acting studio for kids. That’s when I realized my passion for guiding young actors and their parents through the often difficult and confusing process of starting a career as a professional actor. I decided to make the leap and start my own coaching business, where I now currently work with over 30 young actors.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I tell my students all the time that the things most worth having in life rarely come easily. I have faced obstacles like any small business owner. I think one of the biggest difficulties was the uncertainty. When I quit my job to focus on growing my business, I wasn’t sure what the future held. I wasn’t sure that I was making the right decision or that I would be successful. However, I am a big believer that doing things that scare us promotes the most growth. If you aren’t at least a little scared, you probably aren’t pushing yourself to grow.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Kate Melton Coaching is a place for aspiring or professional young actors to obtain expert and specialized scene study instruction, audition coaching, and career consulting. Beginning in February we are offering ongoing scene-study group classes via zoom! Our classes and private coaching sessions combine proven acting methodology, on camera (and zoom) audition technique, and improv. I believe that what sets us apart from other acting studios is our dedication to not only preparing students for class each week but in preparing them for the real world of being a professional actor. This includes on set etiquette, audition preparation, and the “business” of being an actor. All of the principles that I teach have been adopted from my OWN experience as a young performer as well as my knowledge of the inside workings of casting. The thing that I am most proud of when it comes to Kate Melton Coaching is that my students have become an extension of my family. We joke, we have fun, we share stories, but we also get the work done. My students always know at the end of the day that they have a friend and mentor that truly cares about them. That will always be the most important thing to me.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My advice to those starting out as an actor is to find your team. Find the people that have your very best interests at heart that can mentor you and help to guide you through the steps necessary to launch your career. Take classes, as many as you can. As actors, it is so important to constantly challenge yourself to grow in your craft. Don’t let fear of rejection stop you. Remember that with every “no”, you are closer to that life-changing “yes”!
