Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Rocha.
Hi Julie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been into health and fitness for as long as I can remember. Even in high school, I remember waking up at 4am to go running with my Dad around the block before going to school. I was always extremely active as a child, played damn near every sport (except basketball), and have just always loved working out. I always saw working out as my outlet as opposed to a career. I went to school at CSULB and ended up getting my degree in fashion and it wasn’t actually until after college that I decided to follow my true passion. Immediately after graduating and immersing myself in the fashion industry, I quickly realized fashion was NOT my calling but health and wellness was! I started off by getting my personal training cert, then went on to getting several other certifications so I specialize in different areas and target a specific market. I received my regular personal training cert but then also pursued a cert in corrective exercise as well. In addition to personal training, I have always had a strong passion for nutrition and holistic health so I decided to pursue that in addition to just fitness. I have several nutrition certs in both holistic health and general health and wellness. I am certified through both Integrative Nutrition and Precision Nutrition.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, my journey as a holistic health coach/ nutrition coach started with my own struggles. After prepping for several bodybuilding competitions, I developed an unhealthy obsession with working out, food, and body image. I struggled with bulimia, anorexia, and body dysmorphia. Finally, my wake up call (and blessing in disguise) came to me when my body physically shut down. Thousands of dollars later, and after seeing several doctors and specialists, I was told that I was perfectly healthy and my symptoms were all in my head. At that point, I knew I had to take my health into my own hands.
I attended school at IIN (integrative nutrition) and did a year long course on holistic health and an additional six months course on hormone health.
Becoming a health coach was the catalyst for me to change my entire lifestyle as well as my mindset. I’ve learned how to not only nourish my body but how to nourish my mind, heart, and soul. My Journey and my struggles have made me the person I am today and have made me so passionate about what I do. I focus on all aspects of wellness with my clients, body, mind and soul because they all are equally important. I want to give me clients the power of putting their health back into their hands and helping them to live their healthiest and happiest life.
As you know, we’re big fans of Wellness With Jules. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a personal trainer/ Holistic health coach/ wellness coach. I am physically located in Carlsbad, CA but the majority of my clients are from OC/ LA and run the majority of my business online. For personal training, I specialize in corrective exercise, bodybuilding, fat loss/ body recomposition, strength, performance training and senior fitness. I work with clients from all age groups and all fitness levels.
For nutrition coaching, I am big on bio-individuality because NO client is there same and there is NO one size fits all approach. What sets me about from other trainers/nutrition coaches is I am really big on collaborating with my clients and digging deep to figure out what is going to be the best approach for that specific client. Not everyone likes to count macros and not everyone wants to track every calorie that they consume and truth be told, you don’t need to be extreme to get to your goal. I am all about collaborating with my client and designing a nutrition plan that is going to work for them and be sustainable. Rather than using the word diet, I use the word LIFESTYLE, I reach my clients who to make healthier choices, how to be more mindful and how to have a healthier relationship with food. Living a healthier lifestyle will help to support their weight loss or health goals =)
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My advice for finding a mentor would be to first get crystal clear on your goals, your vision and what you want. Reach out and try to establish relationships with those in your field and even those who aren’t in your line of work because you never know who they know. Networking and building rapport/ relationships with people are key. Although I don’t have a specific mentor in my field, my two biggest role models would be two people who are NOT in my line of work but two people who inspire and motivate me on the daily, my Dad and my best friend 😉 These are two individuals that both have an INSANE drive, work ethic and passion for what they do and are NOT afraid to put in the work or let fear hold them back. So thanks Dad and bestie for being my biggest role models and for inspiring me to work hard and release fear <3
