Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rosen.
Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to the opening of One Down Dog started back in 2005 when I completed my Master’s in Clinical Psychology at the Michigan School of Professional Psychology. I started practicing yoga as a way to take care of myself while working on my thesis, which was a time of many all-nighters and minimal showers. Since then, I have completed two 200 hour teacher training programs, level 1 yoga therapy through Loyola Marymount’s Yoga Therapy Rx program, a 300 hour teacher training, and a whole lot of continuing ed.
After my first training in 2006, I got what it truly meant to be of service and felt a strong pull to spread the yoga love. It was a dream of mine for years to open a yoga studio/wellness center – to serve as a space for community and connection. For several years I told myself it wasn’t possible. It was during my 300 hour teacher training that we were assigned the task of writing out our wildest craziest dream and I wrote down all of the details and read it out loud to the group. Six months later, One Down Dog became more than just an idea, it became a reality! We now have three studios in Los Angeles, an awesome female leadership team, amazing souls that work at ODD, and really great students.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I wish I could say it’s been a smooth road, but luckily – One Down Dog has become such a solid community that we’ve been able to tackle all of the bumps and rough spots together, including the pandemic! As with many small businesses, we took a hit and experienced a lot of loss, but we stayed strong together – our students showed up for us, our teachers and staff learned new skills fast and we transitioned our entire studio online in less than 48 hours, we got loans, and we’re thankful to slowly start coming out on the other side. Something I’ve learned from this year is that there is nothing One Down Dog can’t handle because the people that are a part of this place are phenomenal humans.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about One Down Dog?
One Down Dog is an inclusive community-driven yoga and fitness studio where all are welcome. Our classes are all-levels with a range from kick-ass-feel-good to slow-down-chill-out. We want everyone that makes their way onto their mat with us to feel comfortable and accepted – it is our goal that students leave class feeling better then when they arrived. The teachers at ODD are quite diverse, and you can expect a wide range of styles. In addition to the variety of classes we offer, we also offer a range of workshops, corporate yoga classes, one-to-one sessions, yoga adventures and yoga teacher trainings that cover everything from asana, philosophy and anatomy to trauma informed teaching, pre/postnatal, social justice, ayurveda and more!
What makes you happy?
What brings me the most joy is being a connecter for others. Whether thats in connecting people with others for work opportunities, relationships, friendships, etc. or connecting people with themselves, their feelings, and/or their hopes/dreams. I love being a part of making awesome happen in people’s lives. Other things that make me happy: my family, my dog, nature, working with the most amazing humans in the world and long drives.
