Community Highlights: Meet Jessica Lorraine of J.Lorraine Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Lorraine.

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started designing custom dresses and outfits for my family and friends about five years ago. I had a space in my mother’s basement in Paterson, NJ. My desire to become a fashion designer led me to take a leap and move to Los Angeles, CA in 2018. Within these past few years, I worked out of my apartment and eventually a small office space to design and sew for my clients. The business took off with the help of celebrities and influencers wearing my pieces including; Saweetie, Clermont Twins, Ari Fletcher, and more. I quickly realized the boutique would need a team, so I hired more seamstresses to streamline production and work at a quicker pace.

I want to mention that I moved here out here alone and with the help of my cousin. I had no connections and had to learn the way of the industry all while satisfying my everyday customers. Without the customers and supporters of the brand, I wouldn’t even have the motivation or creativity it takes to design from scratch. All of JLorrraine’s pieces are handmade and sketched from a vision alone.

We just opened up our first brick and mortar location in DTLA. We have a team of 10- 15 and constantly growing. The pandemic actually boosted sales for the business and helped us get closer to our clientele. Now they have a place to come and try on items, get sized, and shop!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Nothing great comes easy, I had to learn how to operate a business on my own so there were a few bumps along the way. I struggled with finding a committed and loyal team. Getting people to invest their time into your dream is a part of any successful business. Inventory and fabric supply are sometimes low especially due to the pandemic. Keeping the business afloat during covid was mentally taxing but somehow, it turned around to become a blessing.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
J.Lorraine designs specializes in custom clothing designs for women and now men. Each item is altered to fit the measurements of the client. We pride ourselves on delivering high-quality, high fashion pieces to fit like a glove. What sets us apart is we stay on the edge of new fashion. Our color palette is unique and has a diverse range and we have options for any occasion. Our first store location is in DTLA and is open for appointments and walk-in clientele. The marble floors, chandeliers, and floral aesthetic provide the luxury vibe we aim for in each stitch of our clothing. We are also available online at https://jlorrainecustomdesigns.com/.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My advice is to stay the course and truly develop your craft. Once you’re great at something, you can sustain yourself and your business. It’s also a huge responsibility so just make sure you are in it for the right reasons and it’s something you love. That will keep you in your purpose on the hard days.
