Community Highlights: Meet Jenice Kim of Jenice Kim, M.D.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenice Kim.

Hi Jenice, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I initially pursued medicine to become a family doctor, driven by a desire to form meaningful, long-term relationships with my patients. That goal ultimately led me to psychiatry after a personal experience. While in medical school, I was in a unique situation to help a family member navigate their mental health challenges with depression, anxiety, and addiction. This experience opened my eyes to the difficulties people face in accessing and navigating psychiatric care. It highlighted the importance of a team-based approach, involving family, a therapist, and an empathic and competent psychiatrist.
To ensure I could offer the highest level of care, I completed a four-year Psychiatry Residency at USC, where I gained expertise in treating patients with complex medical and psychological needs.
In my private practice, my philosophy is to treat the whole person. This means moving beyond a biological view to consider an individual’s unique childhood history, personal interests, wants, and future goals. I am committed to providing compassionate, holistic care that recognizes the importance of a team-based approach, psychotherapy, and patient-centered care.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While incredibly rewarding, my journey has faced significant hurdles centered on patient vulnerability and limited patient access. The fundamental struggle is overcoming the barrier of initial trust—it’s a massive ask for someone to discuss their mental health, making provider selection extraordinarily difficult. This is compounded by the noise online, making it nearly impossible for people to discern who is credible and trustworthy.

Although my practice thrives on strong professional referrals for complex cases, achieving online visibility remains a key struggle. We need to ensure that patients actively searching online, often after being dissatisfied elsewhere, can easily find us as the high-quality, reliable alternative they need.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My definition of excellent patient care relies on deep expertise, collaborative teamwork, and a highly personalized model. I have over 15 years of experience in diagnosing and treating complex psychiatric conditions. My training spans psychiatry, psychotherapy, internal medicine, and neurology. This unique background allows me to treat the mind and body as a single, interconnected system, integrating various forms of psychotherapy as needed. As a concierge mental health practice, I ensure timely access, personalized attention, and dedicated care coordination, while actively collaborating with patients’ therapists, PCPs, and family.
While I treat a wide range of issues (including anxiety, insomnia, depression, bipolar disorder, OCD, and ADHD), my special interest is women’s mental health. I provide specialized care across the reproductive lifespan, addressing concerns like PMDD, psychotropic medication safety during pregnancy, and perimenopausal depression.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Psychiatry is currently undergoing rapid advancement, driven by genomic applications, novel medications, and advanced therapeutic modalities. The rise of technology, including AI, digital therapeutics, virtual symptom monitoring, and educational tools, are fundamentally reshaping how care is accessed and delivered.

While I embrace innovations, the future of psychiatric care must remain rooted in a strong human relationship. These new tools will only augment empathetic, patient-centered care, ensuring the human connection remains the heart of the healing process.
