Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Goodman

Hi Jack, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?

Since Graduating from Emerson College with a degree in Sound Design & Audio Post-Production in 2014, my passion for audio technology and psychoacoustics has led me to explore advanced sound reproduction capabilities and formats.

In 2017, a pivotal encounter with the creator of Dolby Atmos at the Sony Mix lot in LA ignited my fascination with metadata-based adaptive audio technology. Recognizing its potential to revolutionize audio delivery and consumption, I dedicated the next 6 years to studying the format extensively.

In 2024, I began construction of what would become my very own master-grade 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos Mix room in Atwater Village. Calibrated and approved by Jonathan Lessner of Dolby Labs, and designed by Russ Belttary of RSPE, the studio reflects over a decade of expertise in constructing Dolby Atmos rooms for the largest most notable mix stages in the World.

What really makes this room special to both myself and the engineers who designed it though, is that it is in a living room setting. It is a rare opportunity to be able to mix in a certified room that has the acoustics of a theatrical mix facility, but the view of mountain ranges and a sunset!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

To me, the cornerstone of freelance success is unwavering dedication. Every project, regardless of scale, is an opportunity to solidify your reputation—a priceless asset in this competitive landscape. Each success propels you forward, while every setback must be treated as a critical learning experience.

In 2015, a singular event reshaped my approach to freelancing. After being let go from a job, I meticulously documented every action that led to that outcome. This self-reflection became a turning point, crystallizing the realization that each opportunity is vital in building word-of-mouth referrals—the lifeblood of a freelance career.

Throughout my journey, I’ve encountered peers willing to compromise on quality for the sake of convenience or quick gains. In stark contrast, my ethos has always been to invest 100% effort into every project, regardless of the rate or time commitment. This unwavering dedication to quality has become the hallmark of my brand—one that clients know they can rely on and confidently recommend.

My journey underscores a fundamental truth: true success stems from an absolute dedication to your craft. By consistently delivering excellence and viewing each project as an opportunity for growth, one not only elevates their work, but also builds a reputation that becomes the most valuable asset in the freelance world.

From social platforms, to radio shows, to national and international broadcast and movie theaters, Jack insures that the integrity and intelligibility of the mix translates. His abilities span complex deliverable specifications of all channel counts and configurations, and he is quickly gaining recognition as a developed Dolby Atmos mixer. The culmination of his growth and prowess in these efforts is exemplified by his recent accomplishment of Re-Record Mixer for the Oscar Award-winning Best Animated Short, “The Windshield Wiper.”

As a sound designer, Jack contributes an expert understanding of psychoacoustics, loudness perception, and technical audio engineering. His attention to detail is evident, and his success in crafting a distinctive and impactful sonic identity is underscored by the repetitive trust placed in him by major brands at the national broadcast level, including Ford, Nissan, Nike, and Toyota.

In addition to his achievements in sound design, Jack is an accomplished composer, who’s most recent work can be heard on the last episode of ESPN’s flagship series, 30 for 30, No Scope: The Story of FaZe Clan. Other recent syncs include popular shows like “Arrow” on CW Network, “Broad City” on Comedy Central, “Treadstone” on USA Networks, and “Emily In Paris” on Netflix.

Recognizing the interconnectedness of music and sound design, Jack integrates insights from both fields, and strives for something that he terms ‘musical sound design.’ As he puts it, “The effort is to engage the timbre, pitch, and timing of the SFX and sound design with the rhythmic, melodic, and tonal characteristics of the music. The goal is to create a cohesive and integrated experience where the components complement each other seamlessly, and enhance the pace of the edit and nature of the story.”

On the production sound side, Jack has earned acclaim as a location sound recorder and mixer. His unconventional experiences recording in high pressure situations around the world with VICE Media would prepare him for challenging environments, such as recording singers on hot air balloons for “The Jimmy Fallon Late Night Show,” and skydiving alongside rappers while mixing during free fall. Jacks expertise in wireless transmission techniques became noted by named companies like Lectrosonics, and was later featured in Headliner Magazine, “Jack Goodman, The Art of Flight.”
