Today we’d like to introduce you to Eryn Young.
Hi Eryn, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my tufting journey during the pandemic. I had been doing punch needle for about a year at that point and I saw some videos of people tufting and immediately knew that I had to try the electric version of this craft. So, I bought a cut and a loop pile gun and all of the things that you need to tuft and gave it a go! From the first moment I put the gun to the cloth, I knew I had found something that I was meant to be doing. So, I just kept doing it every day. There wasn’t a ton of information on all the aspects of tufting at that point and it took a lot of trial and error to get my methods down. I was doing markets occasionally to sell my rugs and so many people really expressed an interest in learning how to tuft. So, a year ago, I started Tuft House L.A. so that people could have a place to easily learn how to tuft without having to invest in all of the equipment upfront and could successfully make a rug in an afternoon without frustration.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There have been ups and downs since opening Tuft House. At first, I was just getting my name out there so that people could sign up for classes. I had great months and slow months, and there were the ones in between. Now, I am booked out about a month and a half ahead of time, so the classes are going really well. My biggest struggle now is just trying to deal with all aspects of my business as I’m growing so rapidly.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tuft House L.A.?
Tuft House L.A. is a studio that is committed to teaching people all aspects of Tufting/Rugmaking from the most basic skills to advanced techniques. We are also an artistic studio with a focus on pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this craft by exploring using texture, unusual materials, 3-D construction, and out-of-the-box designs. We are also starting to sell all of the materials used for tufting, a service that is sorely needed on the West Coast. We have our own line of New Zealand wool coming out, and I’m proud to be one of only a few studios that offer it in the U.S. I have created the place that I wish had been around when I was learning, as well as the place I would want to use as a resource for all of my tufting needs.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
The Covid-19 crisis is when I started my tufting journey- so for me in was a major time of transformation and a new direction in my life.
