Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Janiel Henry.
Hi Dr. Henry, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Since as early as I can remember, I have always had an interest in mental health and wellness. What helps us heal? And what helps us thrive. Those were always questions that fascinated me. From a young age, I was drawn to the helping profession and began as a peer counselor in High School. I loved it so much—the opportunity to provide a listening and supportive ear to students, the witnessing of the power of holding space, and the relationships that were built. With a natural progression, I decided to study psychology in undergraduate school and then pursue by Doctorate degree in psychology, all along the way, simultaneously diving deeper into holistic and integrative wellness practices both personally and professionally. Fast forward to my predoctoral internship—it was in this space that I saw there was a huge gap for women’s mental health and wellness. So often, women are pouring into others all around them, often at the expense of their own health and wellness. Wanting to address these gaps and disparities, I made the decision to take a giant leap of faith and open the first boutique integrative wellness center for women in the Pomona Valley. During this time, I was able to connect with a diverse group of skilled therapists and wellness practitioners that shared the same passion for women’s health and wellness, and in 2020, Women Rise Psychological and Wellness Center was born. I feel so grateful to work with such an amazing all-women team of licensed mental health therapists and wellness practitioners, including a yoga and meditation instructor, massage therapist, functional nutritionist, and a birthworker.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not! Women Rise literally officially started about two weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic and shutdown happened. Nothing could prepare us for the challenges of that season-from mostly all services moving to virtual to the health precautions, all of the uncertainties, and on top of that, my team and I navigating the challenges of the pandemic in our personal lives. The Covid-19 pandemic definitely shifted everything-including how our vision would be executed and how to best support our community during this time and after.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Women Rise is a boutique integrative wellness center specializing in women’s mental health & wellness across the lifespan. Our integrative team offers holistic expertise, including psychotherapy by skilled licensed clinicians, clinical, functional nutrition, women’s wellness practitioner/doula support, massage therapy, yoga movement, meditation, and sound healing, thereby targeting the whole person. Our overall goal is to empower women so that they may not only survive but heal, grow, thrive, and RISE in every aspect of their lives.
In addition to our services, we regularly hosts classes, events, and workshops to support the development of the whole woman-mind, body, and soul.
One of the things that we are most proud of is that in an addition to being a multi-disciplinary team, we are a multi-ethnic and multi-generational team of women. This is something that is extremely hard to find in the health and wellness space—even in a such a diverse region of Southern California. We believe that this diversity makes us stronger and sets us apart.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was an ambivert. I enjoyed spending time with friends and family and going on adventures. At the same time, I often recharged my batteries by spending time alone in nature, reading, writing poems, and learning about different cultures and languages. I have always valued deep, authentic conversations and connections, and that has carried with me to today.
