Today we’d like to introduce you to Dom King.
Hi Dom, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Music is all around us, the hum of a bird or even the sound of a trash truck crushing garbage. I hear it everywhere. As a child in Dallas Texas, I played musical instruments and studied jazz and funk under my grandfather’s watchful eye. So it’s unsurprising that, as an adult, I love music as much as I do. My grandfather was my superhero. His love for Coltrane and Charlie Parker was unmatched. One can claim a love of music, but it is a different endeavor to seek its truth, to study and learn its essence, to commit oneself to the genre fully. I studied for hours daily, toiling away as a band geek playing Saxophone all through school. Today with the anything at your fingertips on the internet, I watch videos and documentaries on the greats in music, closely committing their narratives to memory and taking notes. In 2011 when I moved from Wyoming (after leaving the Air Force after six years of service) to Texas, I tried living the “normal” life of being a high school choir teacher. Don’t get me wrong, I loved being a teacher. As the eldest of four, it’s in me to teach and lead. However, I knew I couldn’t go on ignoring the fire inside of me to actually create music. So one day, I decided to take a day off and create a song, as that part of me had been dormant since I joined the military. That song was called “My Remedy” and it made its way from Texas all the way to Dubai. Now it was no platinum hit, but it had enough success that it gave me the audacity to believe I could make it in a city like LA.
So in November of 2013, I made my way to LA and shortly after started my company “KRMG” or Kings Ransom Music Group. The idea is that even at that young stage in my career, I had already saw so many talented people get taken advantage of and I wanted to build a safe haven for talented artists with something to say(shout out to Andre3K). As fate would have it, I started off here in LA singing and acting but after doing shows with Eric Bellinger, Elle Varner, etc… I realized the spotlight wasn’t for me. It never was but I tried. So in looking over my life, I realized that I had always in one way or another taken the teaching role. Based on that observation, I decided to start taking on the role of A&R/Talent Manager. Since then, I have managed and produced some of the most talented artists you’d ever meet, picking up a few Grammy nominations while managing an artist (Jariuce Banks) in 2019. Placing myself in that role was love at first site. Immediately I knew I had chosen the right path. As I continue to shape my own career in music, I am intentional about picking up the very best habits while gaining new knowledge around every corner. I am currently enrolled at Berklee College of Music, furthering my education of the business of music after completing the Music Business program at UCLA in 2019. I will be completing the Berklee program at the end of 2022.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am divorced since 2011 and have three kids back in Dallas. The toughest part of the whole thing has been not being with them 24/7. I go back home to Dallas 5/6 times a year on average pre-covid and they have visited. My son also lives here with me now but that has by far been the toughest part of it all.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about KRMG (Kings Ransom Music Group)?
KRMG is a one stop shop for artists. A safe haven for artist that just wants to be artist and not worry so much about the details of business while still being fully kept in the loop about the ins and outs of their career. I have a rolodex of the most talented musicians, marketing minds, and other resources that the world has to offer at my fingertips available for any artist that is either signed to my label or chooses to work with us on a song/album basis. The thing that I am most proud of is the authentic and homegrown growth. Just a year ago, I found myself begging for scraps of musical assistance. Now, after my education at UCLA, my networking improvements, and meeting some amazing human beings. The team is stronger than ever. This brand is a brand for the independent, up and coming artist that feels like they have a strong message and brand to get out and they just don’t know where to start. KRMG is the Army better yet the Navy….or whatever BG said
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Every 5-10 years, there is a major shift sonically in the music industry. From the Wu-Tang style of Hip Hop to Nelly, 50, Ti. Now the “authentic” hip hop sound is still in full effect thanks to Kendrick Lamar, J Cole, Pop Smoke(RIP), etc… These days there are many more artists that are heavy on the melodic vibes whereas in the early 2000’s Nelly was still the exception and not the rule. So I am excited to see/create myself the next sound wave that will sweep through the industry.
