Today we’d like to introduce you to Dillesha Davis.
Hi Dillesha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in South LA, an area called the Crenshaw District. I lived in the same house my whole life it’s a family home. I started baking with my grandmother there when I was seven years old. I always helped her around in the kitchen especially when it came to cakes. She mainly made bundt cakes with no decoration just frosting. Everyone would come over for dinner or just to grab a slice of her cake. It was everyone’s favorite place to meet and feel love. After my grandmother passed, I found myself later on baking cakes and treats for my close family and friends in school. I wanted to incorporate art into the edible aspect of cake so I started going on YouTube to learn how to make treats and learn about different cake designs and try them. Then people outside of my circle started to inquire about purchasing items. After receiving a nice amount of inquiries I decided to create an actual business out of it thus “Yes’n Dee Dee’s Cakes N’ Treats” was born, where my passion for art, baking and making people happy meet. My Nickname is Dee Dee, that’s where the name comes from. There’s also a play on Yes Indeedee that’s incorporated into the name. I am self-taught.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road hasn’t always been smooth I remember at a point in time my oven stopped working for months and I was getting a lot of orders so I had to go to my neighbor’s house or a friend’s house and bake on multiple occasions. Another struggle was lack of space at a point in time with no air conditioning so I would have to work in a tiny space and because of the heat of the oven my frosting and chocolates would melt so cakes would start sliding apart, there was a time I decided not to take orders in the summer just because of what I would have to go through with the cakes. I remember days of getting frustrated when my order is due very soon and something doesn’t look right on the cake or order and I would have to fix it or do the whole thing over in a short amount of time. I would stay up all night for hours trying to figure out how to fix things. A lot of the time it was my first time making that type of cake or treat. I really just be winging it and it works.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Yes’n Dee Dee’s Cakes N’ Treats?
I make custom cakes and treats, my most popular items are the strawberry shortcake cheesecake cupcakes and Cakepops. What sets me apart from others is my customer service and my passion for baking. I don’t mind holding the customer’s hand through an inquiry or questions about items. I am very patient and willing to give a positive experience whether they decide to make a purchase or not. My logo is a heart because of the love I have for people and baking. I make a variety of items and I don’t mind a challenge when it comes to combining flavors or designs.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I call them leaps of faith or trusting in God rather than a risk. Of course, as far as “business” terms, things are risks and I do analyze certain circumstances or decisions as risk-taking moves but after the thoughts about it and analyzation I ask God to help me or show me how I should go about this particular thing or if it’s a good idea or not. I usually get an answer pretty soon. I encourage everyone to analyze risky situations with logic but I also encourage them to have some faith while making the decision. A major risk that I have taken lately would be solely working on my business and not having any other job on the side. I am taking the time to pour into myself and my business fully at the moment. I am faithful that the time I am taking will all come together for a greater purpose.
