Community Highlights: Meet Danielle Beck of ivy & pine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Beck.

Hi Danielle, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I had always wanted to own my own business but had no idea how or where to start. In 2019 I decided to finally take the leap and launch ivy & pine 2019 as an online retailer. I began with pop-ups and private parties, and a year after launching I opened a small showroom space and offered an appointment-only shopping experience. 2020 was not an easy year for anyone and I am so grateful that during that time my customer base not only grew but supported the shop by spreading the word to all of their friends. The idea of appointment-only shopping wasn’t new, but it was an exciting and different way to shop and my customers loved the experience.

I loved being able to connect one on one with my customers. Through long hours, countless revisions, blood, sweat, and tears, I was able to open my first storefront in 2021 on Costa Mesa’s lively 17th St. While it was a dream to open a new space, it also felt like I was starting over. I had moved the shop to a new city, the pandemic had no end in sight, I had quit my full-time job and was pursuing my dreams full-time, and my momentum seemed to just stop. But, within 14 months I had moved out of my first brick-and-mortar into a prime floor-level space in a popular retail strip.

The “starting over” stage was over, and little by little the shop has become more successful, and busier, and was named Orange Coast Magazine’s Hot Shop in July 2022.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
There is no such thing as a smooth road when you own a business! But that is part of the excitement and for me, it was part of the allure of starting my own company.

I don’t necessarily go looking for difficult or tough challenges, but it does bring an even bigger sense of accomplishment when I look back on everything I have gone through and have had to overcome to bring my dream to life. The biggest hurdle really is just staying positive and remembering that failure is ok, and that no one is an overnight success.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The shop’s motto is “Cute Clothes For Badass Babes” and it is my favorite thing to tell people when I describe the shop. I almost always hear “Hey, I’m a badass babe!” and that just makes me light up inside. The shop is stocked with clothing, accessories, and home decor. All of our accessories and home decor are sourced from local and mainly women-owned businesses. We also host pop-ups with other small businesses.

When I started ivy & pine I started it with two things in mind: 1. To create a welcoming and inclusive environment that was anything but stuffy. I wanted you to feel like you stopped by your best friend’s house to raid their closet. And 2. To be a place that could give back. This means anything from providing a space for new businesses to have their first pop-ups to donating to nonprofits to being active members of our community.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
People can come to support us at our Costa Mesa shop six days a week or shop with us online or through social media. I love seeing everyone in person so pop in and say hi! We are always interested in finding new businesses to carry in the shop and love to host pop-ups. Vendors and makers can email us to get more information.
