Community Highlights: Meet Carrie Cocan of The IV Girl

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carrie Cocan

Hi Carrie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am of Romanian decent and the first generation to go to college. I did not expect to become a nurse. I would faint at the sight of getting my own blood drawn. My senior year of high school it was integrated that I would become a pharmacist from my mothers push. I thought “wow thats boring counting pills behind a desk for the rest of my life.” I knew the pay cut but did not care.I wanted to do what I felt was where I needed. So I pushed myself. I went to three colleges at once to make it happen. and I got my degree within 3 1/2 years. Having foreign parents was not easy, I had to figure out my FAFSA and other documents I needed to go to college.
I now have obtained my Bachelors in Nursing Science from West Coast University in 2020 and started in the Intensive Care Unit during the COVID Pandemic. Although it were difficult times and being thrown into a disaster of time in medicine I challenged myself and collaborated with physicians on the most up to date
research in her clinical practice. I learned to push myself into different environments. I did travel nursing and learned really quickly of growth and being put in uncomfortable situations, I have been in charge nurse positions and advocating for the right thing. I have extensive experience in working at a low community hospital, Kaiser Foundations, and at The University of San Diego. I have excelled in Emergency Room services, Intensive care (cardiac,
trauma, & surgical), as well as performing procedures for placement of Peripherally Inserted Central
Catheters (PICC lines). I am now in the pursuits of obtaining my Family Nurse Practitioner license. I believe in the affluential role of medicine and integrative health in promoting wellness for individuals in boosting their health and vitality. In my practice I have always told myself to treat others the way I would want myself or my family member to be treated. Working in the medical field I got to experience first hand the ugly side of things regarding care and the business part of things. I always knew I wanted to be a business owner and the idea of holistic has always been something I have been passionate about. I am now the CEO of The IV Girl. The IV Girl is a company that provides IV hydration. My goal is to try to bring awareness to others on the essentials of medicine and the basics of vitamins our bodies need. I started this. business knowing its a risk, What had started this was seeing results in patients getting hydration with great results and high dose Vitamin C; Cancer shrinking and holistic working.Eventually I would like to go into high dose vitamin C research for cancer treatments.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were lots of struggles. From talking to lawyers, doctors, vendors etc,, Being a nurse in California you can’t own your own practice and creating a business they don’t teach you that in nursing school. I was only taught to care. I found a DR with the same vision and was able to make it happen.I had to learn from ground zero on how to open up a practice and follow all regulations. I wanted to grow and build this business in creating a strong foundation all while still maintaining my skills in the hospital working full time. The hospital scene can be bitter sweet some days you have patients getting better and other days are harder when you lose one so dear. I would work night shift and flip back to day shift to make it work. I learned how to talk to business owners and talking to lawyers. I have worked between 2 different hospitals all while trying to build The IV Girl.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Transitioning from being a nurse to becoming a business owner certainly involved taking significant risks, albeit with careful consideration and planning. I’ve always approached risk-taking with a balanced perspective, weighing the potential rewards against potential challenges and ensuring I have a solid foundation before making major decisions.
Becoming a business owner in the field of IV hydration therapy required stepping out of my comfort zone and venturing into the entrepreneurial world. It involved financial investment, navigating regulatory requirements, and building a brand from scratch. However, I mitigated these risks by leveraging my background as a nurse, which gave me a deep understanding of healthcare, patient care, and the therapeutic benefits of IV treatments.
I believe that calculated risks are essential for growth and innovation. By taking the leap into entrepreneurship, I’ve been able to expand my impact beyond individual patient care to providing a specialized service that promotes wellness and convenience. Each step has been methodically planned to minimize uncertainties while maximizing the potential for success.
In essence, my approach to risk-taking is rooted in careful planning, leveraging expertise, and maintaining a steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality services. It’s about embracing opportunities that align with my passion and skills, while continuously learning and adapting to new challenges in the dynamic field of healthcare and wellness.
