Today we’d like to introduce you to Bill Cooper.
Hi Bill, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
This year I am celebrating my 20th anniversary in advising homeowners and renters in and around Downtown Los Angeles. I have lived, played and worked in DTLA since 2002, long before there were many residences to sell. It has been amazing to see how far DTLA has come since then and how far we still have to go. DTLA has made several attempts at creating a Civic Center over many years, but this time around it has succeeded. Aside from the slight setback from Covid and the issues it brought, DTLA has continued to boom. The next 10 years will be something to watch, as that is when many metro projects, residential and commercial developments that are on the books or currently started, will be complete. I have been voted the one of the best Downtown Realtors three times now and I am happy to be of service to anyone who has an interest or questions about DTLA. It takes someone who knows Downtown to guide you in your real estate decisions.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I first started working with Downtown LA’s local government, developers, and real estate groups there were not many who actually lived in Downtown or understood Downtown. It was like working in a small town, even though we were talking about Downtown Los Angeles! Developers had it rough until the passage of the Adaptive Re-use Program that allowed them to adapt existing buildings into apartments and condos. Once condos started coming on the market downtown, I was able to begin selling in DTLA, although the first few sales did not come with any compensation. Once the Downtown Real Estate Association showed the developers they needed us to fill their buildings, then the rest is as they say, history!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
In 2001 while taking some time off from corporate life, Bill obtained his real estate license and joined Coldwell Banker on the Sunset Strip where he earned his place in Coldwell Banker’s President Club and Diamond Society. He successfully helped clients buy and sell homes in and around West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, Los Feliz, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Mount Washington and Downtown Los Angeles.
Bill joined Keller Williams Realty in 2006 and then returned to Coldwell Banker in 2012 to help launch their downtown office. Bill returned to Keller Williams to help develop their Downtown LA office and did the same with John Aaroe Group/Pacific Union Int’l DTLA. When Compass acquired PacUnion Bill was retained as the DTLA Manager. He has enjoyed living and working in downtown since 2002 and has been voted Best Residential REALTOR® in DTLA on three occasions. His fervor for downtown is recognized by his involvement with the development of downtown’s real estate as well as its surrounding communities.
Bill is one of the founders and President of the Downtown Real Estate Association. He is also a member of the Central City Association of Los Angeles. He sits on the board of the Society for the Preservation of Downtown Los Angeles and previously on the Pershing Square Park Advisory Board.
