Hi Avy, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Vietnam, and I arrived in the United States in 2014 with a quiet determination to build something meaningful for myself. In 2017, I earned my esthetician license, and two years later, in 2019, I opened my waxing business—Pure Lotus. From the very beginning, the business felt like my baby.

Like any long-term relationship, Pure Lotus has grown alongside me, through both highs and lows. The most challenging moment came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when I genuinely thought I might have to shut my doors for good. Against the odds, the business survived—and today, it continues to stand strong.

With more than eight years of hands-on experience, I’ve worked with clients of all backgrounds and have seen a wide range of hair and skin concerns. Each client has taught me something new, deepening my understanding of the body and how personalized care truly makes a difference.

I’m proud to be a business owner in Anaheim, right in the heart of a vibrant tourism hub and just minutes from Disneyland. What started as a waxing studio is now evolving: Pure Lotus is expanding into massage therapy, allowing me to support clients on an even deeper level.

At Pure Lotus, clients are encouraged to feel comfortable, confident, and relaxed in their own bodies. Every service is customized based on what the body truly needs in that moment. My goal is simple—when clients walk out the door, they feel lighter, cared for, and genuinely satisfied.

I believe the body is a sanctuary. It requires consistent care and mindful maintenance to create balance in life. When clients come to Pure Lotus, I want them to feel that every penny they spend is truly worth it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—it hasn’t been a smooth road, and I don’t think any meaningful business journey ever is. One of the biggest challenges came during the COVID-19 pandemic. At that time, I truly believed I might have to shut my business down. The uncertainty, financial pressure, and emotional stress were overwhelming, especially when Pure Lotus felt like an extension of myself, not just a job.

Beyond the pandemic, building a business as an immigrant came with its own struggles. I had to learn everything—from licensing and regulations to client communication and business systems—largely on my own, in a new country and a new culture. There were moments of self-doubt, long hours, and times when growth felt slow or invisible.

But each challenge forced me to become more resilient, more adaptable, and more intentional about how I serve my clients. Those struggles shaped Pure Lotus into what it is today: a business built on trust, care, and perseverance rather than convenience or shortcuts.

My go-to resources are mostly on YouTube. I use it as a learning space where I can explore philosophy, personal growth, and different perspectives on life, as well as practical content—business tips, client care strategies, and ways to refine my techniques.

What I value most is the flexibility to keep learning at my own pace and from many voices. Whether it’s mindset work, improving my craft, or understanding how to run a business more intentionally, I’m always looking for ways to grow. I truly believe that learning never stops, and I never want to become too comfortable or satisfied with who I am in the present moment. Growth, to me, is a lifelong practice.
