Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Bohac.
Hi Amber, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always had a passion for the performing arts. When I was seven years old, my parents enrolled me in a musical workshop with Maureen Collins through Easy Street Productions in my hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. I LOVED it but after the 4-week session, my parents told me we couldn’t afford for me to do another month. I was so disappointed, I knew I needed to find some way to do it again. So I went up to Miss Maureen after our final class and asked if I could clean her floor. She at first said no; through my teary eyes, I explained that if she didn’t let me clean for her, I couldn’t take classes again so I was hoping I could clean in exchange for lessons. She graciously allowed me to become her “helper” and I was able to keep taking classes! She taught me how to make copies. I’d help the younger kids, all while she was teaching me to sing, perform and act. Plus, she never made me actually clean the floor (lol). For the next 10 years, as my knowledge grew so did my responsibilities as her “assistant”. I became part of the Easy Street family/cast and had the honor or performing in multiple Easy Street shows at one of the original Warner Brothers Theaters.
Once I turned 18, I made the move to Los Angeles. I literally knocked on an agency’s door unannounced, luckily they admired my moxie, let me audition on the spot and signed me that day! A month later, I signed up for acting classes at Actorsite. At the end of my class, the then owner the late Jack Turnbull offered me an internship I didn’t even apply for. But he saw something in me I didn’t know was there. He taught me not only what an Acting Coach was but how to be one. I continued my internship until he hired me as a coach. My students immediately started booking major roles. Some of my earliest coaching successes were Sage Correa starring opposite Hollywood’s A-lister Halle Barry in “Kidnap”, and Mackenzie Hancsicsak as a series regular in the Emmy nominated “This is Us”, among others.
About eight years Jack Turnbull passed away due to covid and I was approached about becoming Actorsite’s new owner. I reached out to a dear friend and mentor of mine Kimberly Crandall and she agreed to be my business partner and we now run www.actorsite.com together!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Actors hear “no” a lot. I’ve booked and then lost jobs for being “overweight”. Once in a meeting with a manager, I was told to gain 50lbs or lose 30lbs and only then could I come back to his office for potential representation.
Finances were rough. I slept on an air mattress for years and had a cardboard box as my kitchen table for a while. At one point, I was sharing a one-bedroom apartment with four other people.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Actorsite?
