Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Thornhill.
Hi Alicia, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Southern California but it wasn’t until I moved to Florida that I got to finally pursue an education and career in the beauty industry. I gained my esthetics and massage therapy license. Around the summer of 2013, I then moved back to California, got married, and got a job doing full body waxing and secured a second job doing lash extensions in Culver City.
Within the first year or our marriage, we were expecting our first child. After working for other businesses for 3 years, I realized I wanted and needed to create a life where I could create my own schedule, be with my daughter, and make more money.
So in 2017, I left and opened up LiLi’s Esthetics. Initially, I was doing both lash extension and full body waxing. Over time, it transitioned into mainly full body waxing including brow work. I’m proud to say the business has been pretty successful since day 1 despite hiccups and bumps along the way.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Every business has its own set of challenges. The first thing that comes to mind for me isn’t necessarily a “struggle” but the blessing and reality that owning your own business is NOT a 9-5. It’s every day of the week, even when I’m out of the suite. It’s not just waxing but it’s inventory, tracking taxes, answering and sending emails, responding to texts, etc. I’ve learned to be more intentional about stepping away from my phone during certain times of days or even an entire day to be more present with my family. There will always be work to do when you own your own business so you have to have boundaries and give yourself the space to recharge to get back to the work so you can put your best foot forward with your clients.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about LiLi’s Esthetics?
LiLi’s Esthetics is a full-body wax suite. I specialize in using hard wax, Brazilians & brow shaping.
I will say one thing that sets me apart from others is that my clients don’t get just a professional experience but a personal one as well. On the professional side, I’m constantly educating my clients. I feel it’s important that my clients gain a lot of knowledge about the actual process of waxing, the hair growth cycle, and all things related to gaining and maintaining the best results.
As it relates to the personal side of waxing, getting waxed is a very vulnerable experience and I understand that. So, I pride myself on making my clients feel relaxed, safe, and at ease. My clients often tell me they leave my suite feeling more rejuvenated inwardly and feeling more beautiful outwardly. That makes me beam with great pride and joy. Yes, I’m very skilled and talented at what I do. It’s also equally important to make sure my clients have an amazing experience because my services are a form of self-care.
Beauty may look different to every person, but I do believe in self-care and that looking good on the outside is just as important as feeling good on the inside.
