Check Out Serena Lee’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Lee.

Hi Serena, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I initially started my YouTube channel because I wanted to remember my college years. So as a freshman in college, I would just vlog and make short videos. I really liked how I could rewatch my YouTube videos and relive the memories. But I did get busy with school so I was not very consistent. However, when quarantine first started, a lot of my friends told me to seriously start YouTube. I took this as a sign that people actually enjoyed my videos and began to upload two videos every single week. Every week, I noticed my subscriber count increasing. Slowly I went from 100 to 900 subscribers. I was spending a lot of time editing, so I decided to post once every week to every other week. I also started to become a full-time teacher, so I didn’t have as much time as I did before. But then I posted a diet video called “The Jennie Diet (BlackPink)” and it got really popular. My subscriber count went up from 1k subscribers to 10k in a couple of weeks. Now, every time I upload, I get around 500 subscribers, but I have not been very consistent due to work. However, I love my YouTube subscribers who are so supportive, kind, and understanding, so I want to continue YouTube as my part-time job. I really enjoy video editing and I love to make new content. I especially love when my subscribers feel more productive or try my recipes. It pushes me to be more creative and more productive every day.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge is balancing a full-time job as a teacher and creating content that I love and want to share. I want to be the best teacher for my students. I want to inspire them and make them love school. However, doing this at the same time with YouTube can be very difficult. Before I would invest hours on YouTube videos every single day. Now, I only have a select amount of time. There are many times that I feel disappointed that I can not upload the content I had imagined due to a lack of time.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
When I edit my videos, I try to be super creative. I spend a lot of time on my editing, even though I usually upload weekly. For example, I have a video where I dressed like characters in a popular K-Drama. For that intro, I tried to be different from the regular outfit videos. I made it seem as if it was a Netflix TV-Show.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I definitely think that I like to be organized, productive, and I love motivating my viewers. This pushes me everyday to work hard and try my best. Although it is very hard to film and edit my videos with a full-time job as a 5th-grade teacher, my subscribers and the community push me to be the best I can be. When I set my mind to something, I believe that I can achieve it. However, I do not assume that it will come easily. I know that I will have to work very hard, but my persistence, my creative mind, and my motivation keep me going. I am also super quirky. I am not able to show my viewers as much because I am still shy in the video, but I do think it comes out in my editing. I think this quality helps me to make my content enjoyable for the viewers.
