Check Out Ruby Felix’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruby Felix.

Hi Ruby, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Well, they say most ideas come when you’re in the shower or driving but, mine came through a friend. My friend David is one of the funniest individuals I know. When we would hang out, we would talk about friends, men I was dating, life, everything really. So, I would always say things like, “Life’s too short to be crying over people” or “Everything is a process, just trust your path,” and David would yell, “RUBYNOTES.” It just became a phrase he would always say, so when I graduated college and moved back home, I didn’t have a job, so I happened to have a lot of time: time to think about my life and what I want to represent. Honestly, that was my first thought, “I’m gonna put my notes on clothes,” and ever since then, I’ve been working. What I love about RubyNote$ is that every note I have put on a shirt has to do with something I’ve gone through or am going through. The best part of it, though, is that someone else relates to it too.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I would love to say it has, but, realistically speaking, it hasn’t. It’s tough running a business on your own: you’re the creator, photographer, marketing manager, decision maker, model, clothes designer, etc. I mean, having one job alone is already a difficult task. One thing that has been consistent and I continue to be grateful for is the support of friends, family, acquaintances, and many other people. That’s what keeps me on my toes and motivated because it makes me feel rewarded like I am part of something bigger than just clothes: a connection with people.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run a clothing brand called RubyNote$ with notes from my journal. The clothes are streetwear-like, so anything from jersey shorts to long sleeves and trucker hats. The notes are anything from my personal experiences, to my beliefs, to things I witness, to my personality, to my current life and what I want for the future. Although, in order to run that clothing brand business, I run a lash business to keep income flowing for clothing inventory and projects. So, if I’m not being a lash technician, I’m creating ideas for my clothes.

I am the proudest of getting started. I believe that what sets back a lot of people from doing what they love, or what they feel is right for them, is the idea of actually starting; just doing that is enough. So, now that I’ve gotten started, I’ve just been pushing through and making the connections that fulfill my brand as a whole. I can’t stress this enough: Ruby Notes is so much more than a clothing brand. It is a way to tell stories and for people to connect to those stories, and that alone has kept me consistent.

We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I have two answers for that: one is personally and the other is realistically. Personally, success, to me, means doing what you love and making a life out of it. Realistically, success, to me, means financial freedom, not necessarily to become a billionaire but to be able to survive and not have to worry every month about next month’s rent.
