Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Kramer.
Patrick, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
Like many kids, I drew a lot as a child. Mostly ninja turtles and animals from National Geographic. It was a fun hobby, and suited my personality, as I frequently obsessed about getting things right. I was a decent student, but didn’t finish high school, dropping out my senior year.
Eventually, I got my GED and enrolled in the local university. I hated math and writing and was sort of drawn to the arts by default. I was good with a pencil, and I figured I could avoid all the classes I hated as a teenager. I was right. It turns out, college was a lot more enjoyable than high school.
I ended up with a BFA in studio arts, graduating in 2008. I’ve been painting pretty much full time since then.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I’m an oil painter. I mostly create tightly rendered, hyper realistic paintings. My work is pretty diverse – everything from butterflies and flowers to city scenes and landscapes.
My paintings generally don’t have a message or agenda, they’re just an exploration of imagery that I find compelling. Lately, I’m attracted to scenery that has a certain elegance combined with little bit of an edge. A sort of gracefulness, with a little contrast, a little tension. I hope the viewer shares my sense of aesthetics.
What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
There’s the financial aspect of success – when you can support yourself and your family doing what you love. The other aspect, I suppose, is the feeling that you are truly creating the best work that you are capable of, contributing something of worth to society.
Perseverance is essential to succeeding as an artist. You are going to make a lot of mistakes and fail frequently. Learn from those mistakes and move on.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I have work available in several galleries including Arcadia Contemporary in Culver City, Gallery 1261 in Denver, and Meyer Gallery in Santa Fe.
Interested collectors can contact the galleries for purchasing info.
